Britain To Permanently Deploy Two Warships To Asia After Security Deal With Japan Over China Fears

VOA/Reuters: Britain to Permanently Deploy 2 Warships in Asian Waters

TOKYO - Britain said on Tuesday it would permanently deploy two warships in Asian waters after its Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier and escort ships sail to Japan in September through seas where China is vying for influence with the United States and Japan.

Plans for the high-profile visit by the carrier strike group come as London deepens security ties with Tokyo, which has expressed growing alarm in recent months over China’s territorial ambitions in the region, including Taiwan.

“Following on from the strike group’s inaugural deployment, the United Kingdom will permanently assign two ships in the region from later this year,” Britain's Defense Minister Ben Wallace said in a joint announcement in Tokyo with his Japanese counterpart, Nobuo Kishi.

It is more than symbolic. A regular or helo carrier is now more assured of a proper sized or beefed up escort. You are going to have a minimum of 4 destroyers and cruisers t protect a carrier plus subs of course. Those British ships are going to be part of American and Japanese carrier groups. At times the British field better anti-air and chemical than US ships. Not everything is broken in Britain although politicians are trying hard.

Well the Brits are deploying just two ships. Frigate types, I would imagine. No carriers nor their escorts.

Frigates are escorts. They look for subs. Would you rather have 2 cruisers and 2 destroyers or 2 frigates, 2 cruisers, and 2 destroyers?

I don't believe the carrier and escorts are a permanent feature, according to the article. Whatever the two permanent ships are is unknown but I assume they will be small ones. I assume their presence is of a show the flag mission.

Any extra sonar or radar that expands the envelope of awareness helps commander to make decisions soundly and quickly. Try harder.

Will they have crews?

Frigates? No, look these little boats up. They are virtually unarmed despite the single little pom-pom and 2 x GPMGs. Nobody will be scared by these, not eve the illegal gimmegrunts crossing the English Channel from France to England in their rubber rings and dingies....aided by the rotten French Navy.
