WASHINGTON – A "disturbing" surge in suicide deaths among troops has alarmed senior Pentagon officials who say demands for U.S. troops around the world have grown unsustainable and are contributing to mental health problems.
The increase in death by suicide, particularly acute in the Army, appears unrelated to Iraq and Afghanistan, where deployments have declined in recent years. Instead, the unpredictability of life in the military and the constant demand from commanders for overseas patrols by ships and warplanes, as well as the presence of ground troops, has frayed the force, according to a senior Defense Department official.
The Pentagon divides the world into neighborhoods, six sections of the globe overseen by four-star officers. While demand has waned for Central Command, which includes Afghanistan and Iraq, other commanders have been aggressive about seeking more forces, often citing the rise of Chinese influence, according to the official, who is familiar with the requests but not authorized to speak publicly about them.

Where the rubber meets the road is deployment away from home base. How many days were they away from home. I the navy you have this thing that DFAS call as sea counter on your leave and earning statement (LES). It counts how many days you are away at sea. DFAS might not call the sea counter a variable, but it is and it is part of a record which is in a table and any programmer, scientist, engineers or mathematician worth their salt could generate reports and look for relationship between variables.

Operational demands actually executed and not merely desired made by generals become an order that result in deployment planned 5 years out or are exigencies. The 'realized' demands can be seen in sea counters or temporary additional orders to some place often times not in your home area (while not always at sea).
For Marines stress could be away from home in North Caroline living in a fox hole for weeks or months for an exercise or training. It is days away from home. It is stress. Somewhat and somewhat-not the same as stress at doing time at Bagram.

If for instance half of suicides occurred training units like at San Antonio Texas. Think Shower scene of Full Metal Jacket. OR think Murder where the brass covers it up as suicide.

There are commands that track every bad thing criminally to a service member on of off base be it robbery, rape, murder, assault or other. This tracking is doe in a database and goes back over 4 decades. By about this time tracking suicides they probably put down a reasons such as financial, marital, professional, family, etc. They may have more than one reason stored in various fields of the records much as a death certificate has 5 blanks for cause of death from more related to least. Not sure about the latter, but they do know what state, what metro and other information for crimes.

I would think that suicides would be climbing among males of all races who live in western societies. They sit around all day waiting to look down at their phone again. Self mastery is no where in the equation.
I remember several decades ago I was on a mountain ranch where my older brother worked. We were hunting pigs with dogs. WE were on foot chasing the dogs. once we were on a group of hogs, we were looking for the dogs to corner a sow with her piglets. my brothers and I would charge the sow and scatter the sow and the piglets then chase down a piglet and mark the ear. back then the law in california with wild hogs if you put your mark on them you could hunt them anytime of the year without a license if they were on your property. This rancher guided rich men on hunts throughout the year. when the day was done and we got back to the ranch we were all too tired to eat and a bit bruised up. I remember sitting around the fire and the rancher saying, "people who do what we did today never need a phycologist." I was too young at the time to know if that was true but 35 years later I can unequivocally say that is true. Until men cast off social media and use the phone as the tool it was intended for, suicides will be a plague.
