VOA: First task for Afghan forces is to slow Taliban's momentum -Pentagon chief
EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE, ALASKA - U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Saturday that Afghan leadership is consolidating its forces around key population centers ahead of efforts to retake territory lost to the Taliban while the U.S. was withdrawing most of its troops from the country. “The first thing to do is to make sure that they can slow the momentum, and then be able to put themselves in the position where they can retake some of the gains that the Taliban, some of the ground that they have lost,” Austin told reporters traveling with him to Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. Austin said Afghan military leaders are “committed” and capable of stopping Taliban gains.

Commandant General Austin's advice was not for the Afghans. He could care less about them. His talk was performance art for domestic consumption. It was to make him and by extension the administration knowledgeable, to make him look caring and to make it look like the admin was doing something in a time of crisis.

Military advisers in Vietnam had skin in the game. 2nd Louies, Lieutenants and sergeants were embedded with South Vietnamese forces on the front line. They could lose their life at any time. The brass at MACV were in country, not safely parked at a desk in the District of Columbia.
Although Big Foot does not have skin in the game like a normal advisor, he did make sacrifices. He had to forego a double latte to make the presser. What can I tell you. Times are tough/
