There were extraordinary signs of backroom dealing between the US and Taliban today as Joe Biden faces a mounting clamour to extend the August 31 deadline for withdrawing US troops from Afghanistan.
The head of the CIA is reported to have held talks with the leader of the new regime, as Boris Johnson, Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel push the case for keeping the evacuation going longer.
However, Mr Biden still looks to be defying international and domestic pressure to prolong the airlift, even though it means troops might have to abandon the operation and start focusing on their own exit plan as soon as tomorrow.

This is a high level meeting, and my gut is telling me that the US government wants to know what will it take for the Taliban to permit the easy evacuation of American nationals and some of their Afghan allies out of the country . In short. The CIA Director was sent there to find out how much will Washington need to pay-off the Taliban to make this happen.
