CBS: Model predicts 100,000 more COVID deaths unless U.S. changes its ways
The U.S. is projected to see nearly 100,000 more COVID-19 deaths between now and December 1, according to the nation's most closely watched forecasting model.
But health experts say that toll could be cut in half if nearly everyone wore a mask in public spaces.
In other words, what the coronavirus has in store this fall depends on human behavior.
"Behavior is really going to determine if, when and how sustainably the current wave subsides," said Lauren Ancel Meyers, director of the University of Texas COVID-19 Modeling Consortium.
"We cannot stop Delta in its tracks, but we can change our behavior overnight."

The editor's comment has nailed it. I've been pointing this out for quite awhile. The term I've used is "raked over the proverbial coals." "Crucified" is probably a more accurately description.
Objective studies suggest the masks are about 10% effective. As such, wearing them will have slight benefits at the margins in slowing disease spread. They will NOT cut down the spread by 50%. Also, the masks limit exhaling and have deleterious health effects themselves. Wearing them may have negative utility. Proper studies need to be done.
A good first step in finding a path forward would be to strip the medical "experts" of their near dictatorial powers in setting policies. They've had compete control over policy for going on two years now and the hole continues to get deeper!! Bring on leaders in the hospitality and food service industries as equal partners and find solutions!! The expertise these people have in cleanliness and preventing pathogen spread is immense and they're being completely untapped!!

I believe it was the Danes who conducted a study on this as well regarding the efficacy of masks with the conclusion that they aren't particularly effective. When asked when it would be published, the lead author said to paraphrase "when they are brave enough." When the facts aren't on one's side and they have the power, censor baby censor!! While the study I reference, duxvuss the blue paper masks, there's not a material difference between the cloth ones that most people wear and those. Anyone whose worn both can easily attest to this. With these cloth masks we may be able to increase effectiveness to say 12%.

While I will wear them as a societal norm, I'm under no delusion that they actually work on any material way to stop the spread of this pathogen.
What is "novel" here is the government response. We are not only at war with a pathogen but it seems as though we are at war with our government as well. Unfortunately we're likely to be dealing with the ramifications of our government's response long after the pathogen is gone.
Our immune systems know how to fight pathogens and if fed the proper nutrients the success rate is high. Humans are facing this down and doing remarkably well and will continue to do so.
Our immune systems don't have experience with stupid governments. A rushed through vaccine with some nasty known side effects seems very unwise at this juncture. I’m 64 and my wife is 63. I have co-morbidities out the wazoo. We just spent the last month with Corona, but we survived the worst cold of our lives. COVID is not a death sentence by any means. Sure it hits some folks harder than us, but it is survivable for most.
