Should U.S. Military Officers Be Chosen by Race? A Top U.S. Admiral Revealing Remark On Promotions Hints Yes

Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. John Nowell Jr., answers a question during the "Inclusion and Diversity as a Force Multiplier" panel at the Sea-Air-Space 2021 exposition. (U.S. Navy/Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Jonathan Clay)

Harry Jackson, WSJ: Should Military Officers Be Chosen by Race?

An admiral’s revealing remark about naval promotion.

Imagine a U.S. Navy destroyer under enemy attack. Your son or daughter or niece is on board, having volunteered to serve. The decisions made by the captain of that warship make the difference between life and death for your loved one and all sailors on board.

It matters how that captain and other commanders are selected. Do Americans want leaders who are promoted based on intelligence, aptitude, skill and excellence? Or do they want to entrust their children to those who were selected to bump up the military’s diversity statistics?

Earlier this month the Navy’s chief of personnel made a revealing remark that received little public attention. “I think we should consider reinstating photos in selection boards,” Vice Adm. John Nowell Jr. said at a conference. Officers up for promotion used to submit a photo as part of the review. A couple of years ago the services eliminated the photo requirement, aiming to remove any bias.

Adm. Nowell suggested the result wasn’t what the Navy hoped for. “We look at, for instance, the one-star board over the last five years, and we can show you where, as you look at diversity, it went down with photos removed.” In case that wasn’t clear, he continued: “We’re very clear with our language to boards that we want them to consider diversity across all areas. . . . I think having a clear picture just makes it easier.”

This statement undermines every minority officer who has risen through the ranks on his own merit. It says that people like me are useful to the Navy because we are black, not because we are highly trained professionals or because we met the uncompromising standards of leadership.

I notice a very large change in demographics from 1990 to 2000 in officer ranks. I do not know what they are bitching about. I really don't. All admirals and generals are politics to some extent, because they have to be so due to Congress. This seems more of a kissing up disease.

During this time pictures were used, but they were used not for bean counting and affirmative action but due to obesity. Too many obese people were being promoted and therefore pictures were used. Pictures were probably done away with to makes sure boards were colorblind.

Think about the reason for the pictures before this. They were used to ensure personnel made physical standards. Pictures were done away with and we have COVID deaths. not surprising. There are obese people in the military

Look at this picture of Milley. I could cuss and I do feel like it. I loathe the man. I will be more devastating and refrain from cussing. Now, I ask you does Milley look positively RuBeNeSQue?. If you were told Milley had sleep apnea or was having a bad time with COVID due to obesity, would you be surprised?

Off on a tangent is Milley a Bear or a Chub? Please vote. It needs to become a meme.

When we talk about minority percentages in officer ranks, we are mainly talking about Blacks. Minority is often a codeword for Black. Face it Asians are discriminated against by Democrats in universities and elsewhere.

A reason for declining number of black officers has been given. It was that as society became less prejudice, the military had less and less appeal to college educated blacks.

Howe about another reason for the declining number of blacks as officers. There simply fewer candidates. Liberals simply loved them to death. Most blacks go to primary and secondary schools run by liberals and we know what the graduation rates are. So maybe the the military should go farther upstream to get the root of the problem and why blacks are poorly served by liberal (often black) mayors and school districts run by liberals?
