(CNN)President Joe Biden just got some deeply unwelcome news: The pandemic that he was elected to end could drag on deep into a midterm election year, with all the political and economic destruction that could bring.
The warning by the government's top infectious diseases expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, that the crisis won't be under control until spring of next year -- and even then, it will need most American vaccine skeptics to change their minds -- came as a severe jolt to a weary nation.
It also meant that Biden's best-laid plans of triumphing over the pandemic and riding an economic wave into the campaign for congressional election results in November next year now look at risk.
A pandemic that stretches through another grim winter and beyond risks slowing the economic recovery on which Biden is relying for a strong performance next year. It could demoralize the public and trigger the kind of sour mood among the electorate that always spells danger for incumbents. Already, the President's personal approval ratings and public confidence in his management of the pandemic have been ebbing, according to recent NBC and CBS polls.
Biden's partial declaration of victory over the virus on July Fourth looks highly premature -- as do earlier US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention relaxations of mask guidance.

WNU Editor: In the past week there has been two days where Covid-19 deaths surpassed 1,000 on each day (U.S. Covid stats are here).
Over 240,000 Americans have died since President Biden's inauguration, and if current trends continue it will easily surpass the number of Covid-19 deaths during President Trump's term by spring 2022.
President Biden and the Democrat Party ran on a platform in 2020 that they would handle the pandemic better than President Trump and the Republicans. It looks like this is a promise that they are not going to keep.
I usually disagree with the above CNN's Stephen Collinson, but I agree with his analysis that if the Covid pandemic continues into 2022, this will become a political disaster for the President Biden and Democrats.
As to what is my take on there being another destructive Covid wave in 2022.
During this pandemic I have become a student on the history of pandemics. I certainly have read enough books on the subject to feel that I have a better than average knowledge on what we are facing.
Bottom line.
Global pandemics like the Spanish in 1918 last an average two to three years. This means we are probably more than half-way finished in this one.

You cannot understand unemployment merely by looking at U3. You have to look at U3, U6 and labor force participation rate.
There is no pandemic. The CDC will have a trivalent test assay. It will test for COVID, flu and something else. Once that hits sometime after the start of the new year. the number swill be quite different and hard questions will be asked.
There will be people who test positive for influenza and corona. so what actually killed them. Will the public be happy about closing the economy down for flu?

Your analysis on how long pandemics typically seems spot on. I've studied them as well and this is my observation as well.
If this isn't a bio-weapon, I agree most likely we're more than half way through. If it's a bio-weapon, historical analysises may not hold. So far the leadership class isn't acting like they think it's a bio-weapon.

I think they'r killing off the dumb, obese, authoritarian, and elderly. The vaccines are clearly an IQ test. If all the novel prize winners AND the ex VP of Pfizer and the current CEO Z of Pfizer basically admit these vaccines are starting to be a bad idea, and you keep taking them, then that's 100% Darwin test survival of the fittest mentally speaking.

It doesn't matter if you're vaccinated or not, if you don't have natural T-cell immunity, you're not going to be immune to new variants. The vaccines all focus on the spike protein, and there are - as of three months ago - over 1400 variants in the US alone which can evade the vaccines. What the vaccines do is filter out the variants for which they're made, so if you get infected with a soup of alpha, wild type, and delta variants as the major components, plus hundreds of other mutations as minor components, the vaccines will filter out the alpha and wild type viruses, and leave the Delta and the rest alone - and *those* will reproduce. The dominant strain will then, by natural selection, be the Delta strain, accompanied by the rest, and those will be spread to others. So let's say we get a Delta booster shot. That filters out the Delta variant, and leaves the rest, including (say) the Lambda variant alone to reproduce, and be spread. So we get a Lambda booster shot, and that takes care of the Lambda, but the Epsilon variant isn't touched, so we need another booster. And this could continue on for 20 years, until the variant names fill the page. Another thing - these vaccines produce spike proteins which get out in the bloodstream, and they produce lots of bad effects - brain fog, myocarditis, inflammation in blood vessels, blood clots, and so on. My bet is that the effects of periodic injections of spike protein-producing mRNA will have cumulative effects, so that mortality from side effects will increase over time. The vaccines are a dead end (excuse the pun).
