Australia's defence minister has admitted that war with China over Taiwan is a possibility and warned that his country needs to start preparing - just a day after signing an historic defence pact with the UK and US.
Peter Dutton, speaking from Washington where he is meeting with US officials, insisted that the new alliance - which will give Australia at least eight nuclear submarines and other advanced military technology - was about securing 'peace' in the region but the odds of a conflict with China 'shouldn't be discounted'.
'The Chinese.. are very clear of their intent with regard to Taiwan [and] the United States has been very clear of their intention toward Taiwan,' he said.
'Nobody wants to see conflict but that really is a question for the Chinese.'

As I understand it, a big part of Australia's economy is based on trade with China. This will make standing up to them problematic.

Thank you for the reply. I am aware of the time difference between where you are and the US but didn't think about that. I'm not always on this site and don't always have time to respond even I am.
Frankly I'm more concerned about whether or not my country the US will stand up to China than I am as to whether your country will. We have ALLOT of people in high places who are beholden to China. Of course if they feel threatened such as being worried about "dirt" pm Hunter being released, they'll take us to war to try and protect their own!! Others could get "dragged" into it.
