ABC News Australia: Australia to get nuclear-powered submarines, will scrap $90b program to build French-designed subs

Australia's next submarine fleet will be nuclear-powered under an audacious plan that will see a controversial $90 billion program to build up to 12 French-designed submarines scrapped.

The ABC understands Australia will use American and British technology to configure its next submarine fleet in a bid to replace its existing Collins class subs with a boat more suitable to the deteriorating strategic environment.

Australia, the United States and Britain are expected to jointly announce a new trilateral security partnership on Thursday, with a focus on aligning technology and regional challenges.

How come we still deal with this absolute nightmare of a government in Australia?

They're torturing their people, they hold them captive, they took all their freedoms, over what?a virus???

They are criminals holding an entire population hostage, destroying their economy

And we recognize them as legitimate and give them advanced weapons????!!!???

WHAT THE FUCK ARE OUR GOVERNMENTS DOING!!!???

Seems like an odd move for Australia. I would think having 12 AIP French submarines would be a real bolster to the Australian fleet. I wish the US would buy em up 9nstead for the western Pacific.

Goldstein comment is not helpful whereas Adam's comment is, if you want to start a conversation. I would assume that the French submarines are capable enough and cost effective. I would assume Goldstein has some "special knowledge", but his comment is so short as to cryptic and near worthless as a result.

Great choice, the US and UK sub's are way ahead of French designs. Australia needs highly advanced submarines, that are fast, deadly and with great endurance. There is no room for bare minimum here, Austrilia is a huge country where an aggressive China could get a foothold anywhere or just bombard from a distance. Surfaces vessels have no chance against 3 carriers and huge range of destoryiers. Submarines are that force multipler with small crews, fast boats, great sensors and long range weapons they can actually fight back and hold the line with a submarine net.

Depending on the difference in chance of detecting a French versus an Americana or UK design, it might makes sense to go with the French design.

Frankly, I do not know, but I am not going to assume that America has the latest and greatest.

Better to war game it, use computational models and actual exercises. Drones will change the capability versus quality ratio a lot.

This is all about Australia gaining nuclear weapons expertise in the face of the Chinese defense onslaught, the largest military buildup in world history. China is also engaged in a nuclear breakout unseen since the early 1960's.

Why not put nuclear missiles on board too? Aussies "develop" their own warheads and use Trident as the launcher.

I think the thinking has now moved from a defensive to an offensive posture, in which case the nuclear makes sense though they are far noisier and not as suited for shallow water fence plus we all know what Sweden has consistently done to US nuclear subs, and how the old Aussie Collins diesels has sunk U.S carriers in war games.

No they are not more advanced. , just different category . Have a look how Sweden and Australian whisper quiet diesel subs have decimated us ships and nuclear subs in war games.

What's the difference between Australia and China?

The Australian government is mandating human rights violations on a daily basis and industrial scale. And while their entire country is being restructured they are locked in homes. And they're given their money in allowances to not go protest while all this goes on.
Fazman you saying this ain't so? Effete exactly you live in Australia? You must have seen it on your own news if you care to not just listen to the party approved programming. Sky Australia got booted off YouTube for discussing some of what's going on. You aware, or you say this is complete bullshit?

6.37. I agree with you here. I always thought that Faz was an Australian. But after his comment at 6.26 I'm now no so sure.

Strange decision from a military viewpoint.
The french sub is probobly at least as good as the American one and cheaper.

I think this decision has all to do with political consideration.

It is the same for our weapons export. We in Sweden have very good fighters but countries often buy American ones instead even though they are much more expensive (and not so much better as I understand it).

Many greetings from a Swedish fan of this page.
