Angela Merkel's 16-year reign as German Chancellor officially came to an end today as parliament elected her successor - Olaf Scholz - before she handed over control of the country to him.
In a moment reminiscent of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's final day in office, an emotional Mrs Merkel was pictured on Wednesday waving goodbye from the window of a black Audi as she was driven away from the chancellery for the last time, thanking her staff and wishing her successor well.

Thank god the old commie is gone. She wrecked Europe with her left wing immingration policies and austerity programs.
I never understood her appeal but she was there for quite awhile. Now those who voted for her and those who didn't get to pay the bill.
From commie to SPD socialist. No improvement except that stuff will stick to this guy unlike Mutti.
Betcha she ends up on the board of Apple or Twitter within 90 days.
On a board? she is a follower not a leader. Boards do not need yes men or yes women.
