Worse than I have seen with an F18, which lost power and crash on the deck. The pilot ejected, but non one was hurt on deck. My guess is shrapnel from the fuselage disintegrating due to it being composites and not metal.
From reliable sources I have learned the cause of the accident was because the pilot was distracted due to "white rage". Navy brass will accelerate efforts to purge evil white racists from the service.
Sounds like an arresting cable let go. If they snap at recovery they whip around like a giant rubber band.
It is possible that wires in the center of the cable could have snapped and not be seen by visual inspection. Who knows?
Do know that LSO complained of getting a free metal beard, by getting hits by bits of cable now and again.
