"With Russian troops massing and the spectre of war looming over the trenches of eastern Ukraine, soldiers in the dugouts have found solace in the unlikely companionship of stray cats and dogs"

The US Army response to cats and dogs in the war zone is to kill them. Any fool can kill a cat or a dog. Himmler could do it in a heartbeat. If you can euthanize a dog, you could have used the same needle to vaccinate a dog.

Up front it is more expensive. Downstream you save money. Adopting stray cats ands dogs could lead to fewer suicides. That saves one or two million a pop right there.

A number of soldiers are going to get PTSD. That is the nature of war. Having pets might help treat treating it in the field before the vet vet gets states side..

Jason Dunham's unit used a stray dog to good effect while patrolling a border town. The stray adopted the marines, who adopted it. Animals have counters. They keep naughty and good lists. The Americans treated the dog well. The Iraqis did not. The stray would run off dogs ahead of the patrol. There was less barking. The stray did not have to be trained to do it. It was simple pack mentality.
