US Destroyer Challenges Chinese South China Sea Claims

Business Insider: US destroyer challenges Chinese South China Sea claims as US Navy warns 'nothing' Beijing says will deter it

* The US Navy conducted a freedom-of-navigation operation near contested territory in the South China Sea on Thursday.

* China's military said the ship trespassed and threatened the peace in the region.

* The US argued its actions were lawful and that China's claims pose a threat to international freedom of the seas.

The US Navy challenged China's "unlawful" and "excessive" maritime claims Thursday with a FONOP – freedom-of-navigation operation – near the Paracel Islands, contested territory in the South China Sea.

The US Navy destroyer USS Benfold conducted the operation, challenging restrictions on innocent passage and excessive territorial claims by claimant states, China in particular.

This is the sort of thing the US and Western powers should be concentrating on--keeping countries like China in check. The alternative is an ever-expanding bubble of agression and intimidation. It's unfortunate that countering such threats also serves to empower the US/Western globalist agenda, but China in particular has made its intentions clear. Simply ignoring the problem will only legitimize and accelerate its behavior. Now is the time for clear and organized resistance, while China still relies mostly on bluster to get its own way.

On the other hand, continuing to allow China open access to global institutions and mechanisms (UN, WTO, WHO, IMF, etc) sends a confusing message, especially when it's also clear that the CCP is not satisfied with mere participation in these institutions, intends to dominate them in order to facilitate its China-first-and-only purposes. It's the geopolitical equivalent of allowing a schoolyard bully free reign while ignoring his obvious disdain for the rules, rather than an occasional punch in the nose to get him back in line.

But the current brand of globalism is characterized by such contradictions. Apparently, it's not a bug, but a feature.
