White House National Security Adviser Warns Of "Severe Economic Consequences" If Russia Invades Ukraine

CBS News: Sullivan warns of "severe economic consequences" if Russia invades Ukraine

Washington — White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan warned Sunday that Russia will face "severe economic consequences" from the United States and Western allies if it invades Ukraine.

"In terms of sanctions, what we have laid out is a very clear message to the Russians, and we've done so in concert and in unison with our allies that if they do further invade Ukraine, there will be severe economic consequences and a price to pay," Sullivan said in an interview with "Face the Nation."

"If it turns out that Russia is pummeling Ukraine with cyberattacks, and if that continues over the period ahead, we will work with our allies on the appropriate response." The Biden administration has been pursuing a diplomatic response to the build-up of tanks and more than 100,000 Russian forces along Ukraine's eastern border, and it has been clear it prefers the diplomatic route. U.S. and Russian diplomats met in Geneva, Switzerland, last week to try to defuse the security crisis involving Ukraine.

So Biden is doing so poorly we're gonna get a "Wag the dog" war aren't we?

waiting the "fait accomplit" is a poor strategy and an obvious weakness. What other countries will think?

Jac is exactly correct.

Worse is is delivered by Anthony Sullivan, who looks boyish. Looking boyish is good from the standpoint looking youthful as long as possible in your life. It is deadly I believe in foreign affairs. Not only does he look punchable, when he utters stupid words, but he looks like a baby, whose sucker you could steal.

If you also think Sullivan is a physical and mental coward, that is nothing but a green light.

This is more serious than people might think. They count battalions and opine there are not enough. Besides point out that the Campaign for France was on equal terms (troops) or unequal against the Germans in terms of tanks, there is this. The Russians have been accused of hiring mercenaries or adding regular troops into the ranks of the Donbas rebels.

Well, that can be switched around. The rebels can augment the Russians. They can pull rear area security and maybe flanks. How many battalions are there of those?

In a pinch perhaps the Belarus can send troops in Russian uniforms.

It is a meat grinder to send troops into a city as large as Kiev, so I think they would mask it. I think Chris is right about the acquisitions the Russians want.

It might work to the Russia's advantage to devour Ukraine in 2 chunks. The rump state could be left to twist in the wind for maybe 2 or 3 decades until the people would rather be part of Russia. Without an industrial base rump state Ukraine would sink into poverty. Of course officials would not want to be poor and so would engage in some level of corruption.

The FSB could bribe officials to give up details of Biden/Podesta corruption to keep roiling American politics.

You want to try again? This time with feeling.

There a wage gradient. It is sort of like a temperature gradient. If Turkey, Moldava and the Caucus reign had higher wages, Ukraine would too. That is not say that there is not corruption in Ukraine and that it is a big problem.

I note that Russia, well Russia is not doing that well either.

I also mean to say that you are too facile and glib by half.
