SCMP: Beijing will pay if it helps Russia evade sanctions, US State Department official warns
* 'China, if it were to seek to evade the sanctions, or somehow dividing the sanctions, they would be vulnerable,' says Derek Chollet
* The nations that have joined in sanctioning Russia represent a combined 50 per cent of the global economy; China accounts for around 15 per cent
If China tries to help Russia evade sanctions in the wake of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, it will face countermeasures, a senior US State Department official said on Thursday, without providing details.
State Department counsellor Derek Chollet said the allied nations that have joined in sanctioning Russia represent a combined 50 per cent of the global economy; China accounts for around 15 per cent.
"China, if it were to seek to evade the sanctions, or somehow dividing the sanctions, they would be vulnerable," he said.
"Any country that tries to evade these sanctions will also face the consequences of its actions. I don't want to speculate with that would be."

So it's getting quite obvious now..
200+ nations have sided with the West and Ukraine
About 5, very important ones though (China, Russia, Iran, Syria) are siding with the invaders
Hmmhmmm China could lose this one, even if they team up with Russia. Economically the 200+ countries are more important. Also by sheer population, it's about 2bn (mostly driven by China's population) against the rest 6.5bn
It also looks really, really bad to side with Russia on this and China is doing itself no favours to support the invaders. Particularly as they are trying to polish their image.
If Putin gets assassinated/dies prematurely/gets arrested or his efforts in Ukraine fail (which is very likely due to the fierce resistance), then the calculus will be even more in favour of abandoning Russia and its lost efforts.
I think China sees it for what it is.. and they have a choice to make - the same choice as it was years ago: Join the rest of the World, or get isolated.
Not possible you think?
There is a HUGE appetite among European and US population to do exactly this, as so many jobs have been lost to China thanks to our treasonous leadership.
why are jobs lost to China? right. now if you made stuff in your country, would you try to make it cheaper to maximize profits? You do not make stuff so you want others to do what you do not have to do
Diane Feinstain and Paul Pelosi hardest hit.
What can bankrupted USA will do, start a war.
There are follow on effects such as now US airlines can't fly to Asia via the north polar route over Russia but Chinese carriers can. Advantage China. Will the US tariff Chinese carriers to bring equality to fares so Delta, United or American can compete?
Flying from the Midwest or West Coast to China no North Pole route is needed.
Chinese wanting to go to university, Chinese business people and Chinese spies will be hardest hit.
China does not want to lose a big market for making American goods. On the other hand, if China gets nasty, we can have all those goods made here. Big win.
