His definition of success or failure might be very different from ours. 

The analytic consensus in the West is that Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine was a huge mistake which he must now regret. The attack has been a costly failure and Putin is now looking for an exit strategy. The latest evidence is Russia’s retreat from Kiev, with the suggestion of a shift to more limited war aims – the capture of Donbas. 

Whether this picture is correct or very wrong matters greatly. It will determine Western policy – based on perceptions on who is “winning” – and therefore how this war plays out. But more importantly, it bears on the long-range strategic decisions required of Western leaders as world stability teeters on the brink of chaos.

I think the nexus is clear, it’s win or lose for Ukraine.
So how can Ukraine win? They need to be able to drive Russian troops out of Ukraine.
To do it they will need a weapons pipeline thru Europe for sophisticated offensive weapons.
They’ll need Germany in particular to withstand the economic pain coming their way.
Can Germany with stand civil unrest due to unemployment, inflation and energy shortages?

Hard to tell the future of an unstable situation. Time give also many surprise, history is paved with unexpected event, no matter the side is.

Today russia and russians think they are at war with the west
It is time for the west to momprehend it take the head out of sand and start really acting not just sanctioning one or two officials
