Zero Hedge: If Poland Hosts US Nukes, Russia Will Station Nuclear Weapons Along Western Border: Kremlin
As fully expected, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Wednesday blasted Poland's offer to the United States of its 'readiness' to host nuclear weapons for NATO.
The recent words of Deputy Prime Minister of Poland Jaroslaw Kaczynski were widely reported this weekend. He told Germany's Welt Am Sonntag newspaper: "If the Americans asked us to store American nuclear weapons in Poland, we would be open to it." "If the US were to ask us to host nuclear weapons in Poland, we would be open to this option. Such a step would enhance deterrence against Moscow," he had said.

Pointless and dangerous proposition. Reverse Cuban missile crisis.
Pollocks could start their own nuke program and have bomb on a nuclear capable missile in 6 weeks.
Using physical chemistry there are 3 ways of making you own enriched nuclear material such as Clusius column or centrifuges.
At this point making a bomb is almost as easy as 3D printing a gun. We are past nuclear nonproliferation no matter how great the expense account is for the nuclear negotiators. Get over it. It is time for the UN to work. That more nations do not have bombs is amore a testament to their sloth and greed than not being able to make one.
Developing a simple nuclear fission bomb is pretty simple if you have the material, but the enrichment process to get that fissile material is still a major engineering challenge and takes a lot of time, and pairing the weapon with the necessary delivery method is another layer of difficulty. I think you're right generally speaking that nuclear weapons aren't that far out for many states but we're probably talking years with a huge amount of resources and necessary knowledge. Plutonium reprocessing requires a full nuclear fuel cycle, so for quickest option we'd be left with sub 'weapons grade' enrichment of tens of kilograms of Uranium...best case scenario resulting in a Hiroshima yield bomb in the kiltons yet to be paired with advanced delivery methods. Artillery round? Air dropped? Cruise missile? A single nuclear test or even discovery of centrifuges is inviting a first strike from a country with thousands of nuclear weapons swimming in delivery methods and in the megatons of yield.
Rather than self preserving I think it would be suicidal for Poland to try and develop it's own... hosting American weapons would happen fast and is much less likely to see a reaction with force...but that in my opinion is still an escalation that doesn't benefit the West while creating greater risk.
The point is looking at Poland developing its own weapons is to throw a wrench in Russia's argument about basing nuclear weapons there.
For some reason Japan seemed quite good at processing uranium despite a late start, lack of army and navy coordination and heavy bombing. So much so it almost gives you the willies.
I think assumption that it would take a long time are mistaken.
