This move is ill advised.

For starters, it is de facto fighting a war without declaring a war. Between 1/3rd to 1/2 of the American population (or many people around the word) do not understand this. I think it is closers to 1/3rd than 1/2. It might be as low as 15% to 20%.

It might be argued that people know about hybrid war, since it has been written about extensively for 5 to 10 years. I think this is also mistaken. People have heard of it and are aware of it, but they have not given it much thought. This is due in large part to having to make a living and other things. They have not war gamed this out in their minds.

Going to war with Russia was needless. It would be much preferred to have Russia in the EU and NATO. Keeping secrets is not a reason for not having Russia in NATO. The US does not share everything with Britain, France and Germany and vice versa. Also it is not like the Russians are not spying already and have some measure of success. After all you can buy a presidential family in toto for less than 10 million. Ask Hunter, James and Joe.

Democrats and others think they are so sensitive, caring and nuanced. People have pointed out that Russia is its own civilization. They have a point. It is also pointed out that Russia is in both the European and Asian spheres. Prior to 1241 IMO it was mostly (80% to 86%) in the European sphere. The Mongols change that. Peter the Great shifted it back the other way.

The Orthodox and other churches are not so far apart. It has to be taken into account, but Russia is closer to The West than it is China or Islam. However, the fuckers are pushing or have pushed Russia into China's embrace.

Good Job Assholes!

I have zero sympathy for Russia's problems. They brought it on themselves. Keep killing civilians and it's going to get worse for them. That a fact.

Jeff,

I am not totally sure about the Azov people. Given there is so much back and forth getting into the weeds and finding out the truth is now a must.

It doesn't help when a prominent Ukrainian says cut their nuts off. There are war crimes on both sides. How much on either side IDK. My guess is that the Russian are committing more. I will believe this until further study after the war has ended.

I do know this. All those people ballyhooing that Azov is gone or will be gone and now the hardest fighting and most effective best Ukrainian are gone are wrong. I regard it as blatant, risible propaganda. There are a lot veterans now on both sides. Russia has 125 to 150 thousand veterans minus about 20,000. Ukraine has about 900,000.

I think one of Putin's major disabilities is he is a spy and not also a soldier. No doubt Putin is or was physically tough, brave and proficient in fighting. But I believe Putin is blinkered, when t comes soldiering. I would put many political generals in the US and elsewhere in the same boat.

What I see form the maps is not just gains in the north due to Russian withdrawal, but also to the east as far as Kharkiv. There are gains is the south in the direction of Kherson.

Kharkiv no longer appears surrounded or it is not out of the question that it could be relieved. If Kharkiv is relieved, it would spell trouble for the northern pincer of the Donbas encirclement. Th encirclement could still be successful and the trapped troops captured or annihilated, but Putin might pay a higher price than expected.

Kharkiv might still fall after being relieved due to Russian reinforcements. Without satellite and of intel, it is hard for the layman to give a better guess.

I can see Putin mouthing the words inconceivable as many times as Wallace Shawn.

I view this war much like WW1. It is totally unnecessary.

Spot on!! There's very little that could be added. I sure wish Trump diplomacy had been supported, nurtured, and been allowed to continue. Alas, it wasn't. Now we are in a shooting war with Russia

I like your optimism about closer to 1/3 not understanding hybrid warfare. I personally think it's closer to 80% of Americans don't get it. You're right about having to make a living!! I've had to make the time to try and "game" these things out even if I deplore the term "game" to describe this as it's no game!!

It should be reiterated that 30+ countries making up around 55% of earth's population didn't condemn Russia at the UN. Such rash and heavy handed actions at this will likeky drive these countries countries closer to the Russian position. This is further exacerbated by the fact that these nations identify much closer in terms of values with Russia than they do with America.

While they could be persuaded to our side or even to continue to "abstain" Essentially staying neutral that's going to be very hard to do. In contrast, it's not going to make nuch to cause them to shift toward Russia.

Part of selling is "knowing your audience." To me, this move on the part of the US suggests a fundamental lack of understanding of the audience. Also, should Russia default O would anticipate the holders of Russian debt to primarily blame America and it's leadership as opposed to Putin and Russia. Severe blowback against us becomes very likely should such an event take place.

With this in mind frankly I'm shocked we've gotten the cooperation we've gotten. For example, I would have expected China and India to have voted with Russia and I'd have expected countries like Germany abd France to take a more circumspect approach and abstain.

How we "game" something out influences the conclusions we reach and our own biases obviously can affect this.
