U.S. Says India To Face Significant Costs If Aligned With Russia

Bloomberg: India to Face Significant Cost If Aligned With Russia, U.S. Says

(Bloomberg) -- President Joe Biden’s top economic adviser said the administration has warned India against aligning itself with Russia, and that U.S. officials have been “disappointed” with some of New Delhi’s reaction to the Ukraine invasion.

“There are certainly areas where we have been disappointed by both China and India’s decisions, in the context of the invasion,” the director of the White House National Economic Council, Brian Deese, told reporters at a breakfast Wednesday hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

The U.S. has told India that the consequences of a “more explicit strategic alignment” with Moscow would be “significant and long-term,” he said.

While the U.S., Europe, Australia and Japan have piled economic sanctions onto Russia in response to its war against Ukraine, India has declined and instead has sought to continue imports of Russian oil.

Well, should the world's largest democracy be treated as a second-rate junior partner in the American Empire?

As a great and ancient civilization without agency?

I think they'll pass.

The US needs a good relationship with India. Leave it to the Biden incompetents push India into the sphere of Russia.

Biden did not push. India decided it wants what Russian sells. You seem to dismiss any nation that sides with Russia as ok so long as Biden tries to get Putin out of Ukraine. Well I say fuck India. They are a democracy, yes, in a sense, but not for Muslims there these days. And yes: I want Putin punished for what he has done and you seem to support those supporting Putin. I guess we can no longer have a play date, comrade.

Warnings and threats. Warnings and threats. US foreign policy seems to be based on warnings and threats. This shows the international elites who dictate US foreign policy are not up tp the task. The whole rotten house of the ruling international banking cartel needs to be torn down.

India has very long and established ties with Russia. Their relationship now is more out of inertia than common interests, but it will take a long time for India to decouple from Russia. The US should show more patience and understanding.

As Russia becomes more dependent on China, it will gradually become more anti-India. But it is still a long time away before Russia has to make any choices.

The US and Europe need to understand that while Russia's invasion and Ukraine may be a direct threat to them, that the rest of the world does not believe they have a dog in this fight even if they are against Russia's invasion. It is not something that directly threatens their interest.

The better way is to work towards the long term alignment of India's interests with those of the West. It shouldn't be trying to bully short term compliance. That's simply arrogance and does not appreciate India's current situation.
