U.S. Soldiers War-Gaming A Taiwan Invasion Scenario (Photos)

WNU Editor: It looks like all the action will be in the northern part of the country. It mimics the best places for Chinese troops to land maps below:

I lived in Taipei in 1998 for almost a year got to say the prospect of an invasion is the talk of dreamers and planners. My employers once took us to a beach it was jagged volcanic rock that they had carved pools out of for swimming. The sandy beaches were fine sand with single road passages through the mountains which were marked with flags for artillery. There was one good railway that ran the center of the island along a canyon. The geography of the island is a nightmare, you would be looking at losses that would rival Iwo Jima and Okinawa put together if the Taiwanese choose to fight. Most Taiwanese in those days considered themselves Chinese and probably would have supported reunification until they witnessed the Hong Kong turnover. I think the independence movement has grown exponentially since I was there especially with the younger generations. Taiwan had several battalions of older m60 tanks that they kept in storage, the jungles were impassable. Taipei itself was set up with roads that created bottlenecks, bridges that could easily be sabotaged, artillery dug into the rock. You would be talking about a lightening attack with paratroopers to capture a port if they were lucky. Taiwan has limits on their supplies of course but amphibious operations are probably the most difficult maneuvers. The PLA has never even attempted one to my knowledge. The United States last did one with offshore guns from battleships to soften defenses. It rained over there nine out of ten days, mudslides inland were common many of the rockslide videos you see on YouTube are from Taiwan.
