Residents in the Russian region of Samara gathered on January 3 to mourn the loss of local soldiers killed in one of Ukraine's deadliest defensive strikes as Moscow put the blame on its own soldiers for using their mobile phones, which might have provided the data Ukraine used to locate them.
Russia's Defense Ministry said 89 soldiers were killed when Ukraine launched the artillery attack on December 31 on the Moscow-controlled town of Makiyivka in the Donetsk region.
The ministry had put the figure at 63 a day earlier. Ukraine's military has claimed about 500 soldiers were killed or wounded in the attack. RFE/RL is unable to confirm either side's data.

I had seen lots of deatroyed Russian military equipment.
All some one had to do was see that the Russians were using the school as a barracks. That is all an Ukrainian spec ops or patriot had to text. They did not have to give coordinates. The Ukraine already have the coordinates through proper city planning or satellites.
The use of the school as a barracks could have been given away by analysis of signal traffic and/or satellite photos seeing vehicle traffic patterns. Cell phones do help. However taking away cellphones by itself will not solve the problem.
The Russians will have replacement for the KIA and WIA. How good they will be is debatable. Here is the kicker. A lot of officers died in that attack. So you replace the grunts, how will the officers be replaced? With out good offices the debatable replacements will be even more debatable as effective soldiers.
Russia has tried using officers from support like logistics to command infantry. Those officers do not like the idea. It is debatable about how good of a solution that is.
The soldiers gave away their own position? Maybe.
It is also a convenient way for the government to deflect blame.
Maybe the Russians could set up a Mars station like a rabbit warren.
The geotagging explanation makes perfect sense.
