The Telegraph: Beard row as new Russian army chief orders all troops to shave

The commander of Russia’s forces in Ukraine has ordered soldiers to cut their hair and shave, sparking a row with his bearded Chechen and mercenary allies.

Chechnya’s leader Ramzan Kadyrov criticised the order as a deliberate “provocation” and said it was a distraction from the real business of fighting. “Let’s just drop our guns and go and shave,” Mr Kadyrov said on his Telegram channel. “What kind of nonsense is this?”

Western intelligence said that General Valery Gerasimov, appointed overall commander of Russia’s forces earlier in January by Vladimir Putin, was trying to promote more discipline in the Russian army.

Those with religious affiliations will get exemptions. The general staff brought it up as it pertains to the newly incorporated Donbass militias and mobilized reservists. As always, level heads win the day.

Personally I'm of two minds about beards. Historically their popularity in militaries ebbed and flowed. I don't like beards myself they're awkward to have but I don't have an issue with the ones that have one.

So let me get this right. People, who are in comfortably heated officers and homes, are telling people, who are living rough in the trenches without running water and have a significant chance of dying or being wounded, to shave their beards.

Soldiers in the trenches in WW1 got lice and many of them did not have beards.

Level heads will win the day. Why should it be an issue? So many items in the agenda and some morons want to waste take time to address this.15 minutes in a meeting or several days discussing this delays talking about some more important things.
