Kyiv seeks to break ‘taboo’ on supply of aircraft as defence ministry announces withdrawal from Soledar

Germany’s offer of 14 Leopard tanks triggered calls from Ukraine’s government for western fighter jets and more heavy armour as it formally announced its forces’ retreat from the eastern town of Soledar after nine months of bloody battle.

Kyiv lauded Berlin’s decision, along with reports the US was preparing to send its own Abrams tanks, but the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and his ministers are also seeking to break a “taboo” on the provision of jets such as US-made F16s.

Ukrainian pilots are probably already in the US getting trained on the F-16. Oregon and Oklahoma have large ANG inventories.

Yeah they keep asking for handouts. As far as I know, as an American, I have never purchased anything from Ukraine. After the Soviet Union fell, Ukraine was well equipped militarily and had nukes. Over the years, they degraded their military and gave the nukes back to Russia. Sounds to me like they are reaping what they sewed. This is not our problem and we have no dog in this fight. We should be focused on cutting government spending, not giving handouts.

Thanks "Duke". You used to speak in shorter sentences though, making your point by saying, "That'll be the day" or "here's my word, get the hell off my spread, NOW"

Handed over with security guarantees ..left out that important detail. Well equipped? Nope , that came after Crimea

Not handouts. The US made security guarantees to Ukraine. Russia is an aggressor and aggressors must be dealt with.

Anyone know, why did the US make security guarantees to Ukraine? Being a world police force is expensive.

I meant well equipped in the early 90s, lots of ex Soviet equipment. Appearantly military spending was not a priority from then until the Crimea takeover.

Well Mr. Juan Wayne persona, the US made the guarantee for the same exact reason as why the Brits and the French entered the Crimean War.

Nuclear non-proliferation was a secondary, but welcomed reason also.
