U.S. To Send Ukraine “Vampire” Counter-Drone Systems By Mid-Year

Defense News: Pentagon awards $40M ‘Vampire’ contract for Ukraine’s drone defenses

WASHINGTON ― The Pentagon has awarded L3Harris Technologies a $40 million order to send Ukraine “Vampire” counter-drone systems by mid-year, the company announced Monday.

L3Harris said it will install 14 kits onto vehicles the U.S. government provides Ukraine. Vampire, which stands for Vehicle Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment, consists of a laser-guided-missile launcher that can quickly be installed in a civilian truck bed.

The kits are meant to allow Ukraine’s ground forces to strike ground targets as well as drones that Russia has been using to hit Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

WNU Editor: $3 million for each kit. Wow! Someone is making money. And that does not include the munitions that needs to be supplied.

$3 million versus how much damage an Iranian drone can do to transformers in a substation.

3 million seems high to me, but I have not priced some of the parts or done a complete cost accounting of the system.

Some of that price tag is pure inflation caused by the Democrats and their COVID and infrastructure bills.

My belief is that inflation is caused by poor people or more specifically giving poor people money. they get the money and can create demand without creating any supply of goods or service themselves. The more money you give them, the more inflation.

You also get it, when you overpay for goods and services. Overpay for a road project, you will get inflation.

The government has costly acceptance and quality standards. Will not argue they always work, but they are costly. Also you have small lots.

The deal is probably about the Pentagon wanting to field test the system in real conditions more than any of them care about cost effectiveness.

If you think this system is against the Iranian missiles people keep calling for drones, and you're very much misstanken. This system is to combat the small commercial drones that drops grandes on people. Whomever has the most grandes and drones (commercial drones) will win this war. That's how it is.

But 13 kits for the whole front is a lackluster, this is for R&D, nothing more.

Gonna add a little confusion to the auto-translator many of us rely on for timely reports. Just this morning I saw that two "Vampires" were destroyed and I had to go back after reading this and see that it was referring to the Czech MLRS Vampire system.
