USNI News: Military Services Competing Over the Same Recruiting Pool of Less Than 500,000

SAN DIEGO – The Marine Corps and other service branches are competing to attract the same 412,000 eligible Americans between the ages of 17 to 24, a Marine recruiting commander said Tuesday.

There are approximately 32.8 million Americans, part of Gen Z, but when looking at those who qualify for and want military service, that number quickly dwindles to 412,000, said Brig. Gen. Jason Morris, commander of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, speaking at the West 2023 conference hosted by the U.S. Naval Institute and AFCEA.

There are a number of disqualifiers that account for bringing the number to 412,000, Morris said, including obesity, drug use and mental illness.

“We encourage people to get help, but once they get help, it’s in their records and we have to sort through that,” he said.

The number of Gen-Zers, or those who were born between 1997 and 2012, is approximately 7 million – less than that of millennials. This means the services, which have to compete against industry in addition to the other branches, have a smaller pool of people to attract, Morris said.

The Army is whistling past the grave yard.

"Young people don’t want to die or get injured, deal with the stress of Army life and put their lives on hold.
They “just don’t see the Army as something that’s relevant"

That's what the article said.

Part of the problem:

When American society adopted wokeism as its guiding principle , the American left wing

(which is basically the driver of American culture) dumped the concept of patriotism in the ditch.

Who wants to join the military now? American culture looks at traditional American values not just as passe, but as evil and deplorable. If you are a conservative patriotic American, do you really want to fight for a country where the controlling levers of power are in the hands of radical progressive woksters who hate you?

So what these cultural leading fools did, was cut their own throat. Who will sign up now to fight the Russians or Chinese?

Remember all those guys trying to get the hell out of the Ukraine and Russian when the war started? You will see the same thing in the US if they ever start the draft. The only difference is that the numbers will be a hell of a lot larger. Why? Because those slavs over there have a stronger sense of family and traditionalism. Most of their people stayed to fight. You see it today on both sides.

Blame wokeness all you want.

(30.7%) are "overweight"
(42.4%) have "obesity"
(9.2%) have "severe obesity"

Right off the bat 80% of candidates are ineligible because of cheeseburgers.

Not going to disagree with that one either.

Nor criminal / drug problems

Nor lack of education

An additional note

Understand a larger point

Being fat is a problem with the ENTIRE eligible population.

But out of that Entire ELIGIBLE population, who has been the MAIN STAY of military recruitment enlistees??
Mostly patriotic traditional conservative Americans. Most of these were from the south.

The woksters and progressive left who control the military really screwed up now. Because they pissed off America's traditional mainstay pool of enlistees.

Why join an organization who looks at you as some kind of deplorable?

That's one of the Main reasons, that at this moment in time , military recruiting is worse than it has been in years. It has always been a tough job being a recruiter. But now it has gotten worse...way worse.

And that's a fact.

BTW The second most people who joined, were people who needed job or wanted free college money....ie mercenary reasons. When combat comes , this source of enlistment dries up real fast.

The army and rest of DoD will never admit this. Right now, in this political environment, It would be career suicide for any leader in DoD to go against the cultural transformation that has happened in America.
