CNN: Japan and South Korea agree to mend ties as leaders meet following years of dispute

The leaders of South Korea and Japan promised to resume ties in a fence-mending summit – the first such meeting in 12 years – as the two neighbors seek to confront threats from North Korea and rising concerns about China.

“From now on, I would like to open a new chapter in Japan-South Korea relations through frequent visits by both sides that are not tied down by formality,” Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said in Tokyo after meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Mutual visits by Japanese and South Korean leaders have been suspended for 12 years as ties soured over several issues, including a wartime labor dispute.

"Mutual visits by Japanese and South Korean leaders have been suspended for 12 years as ties soured over several issues, including a wartime labor dispute."

LOL, a "wartime labor dispute"--what a sweet way to put what really happened! Japanese soldiers in WW2 kidnapped Korean women and forced them to fuck 20 or so Japanese soldiers a day for as long as they lasted, and then refused to compensate them even though Japan became a rich nation and could have afforded to do the decent thing nd pay them some support. After all, the Japanese ruined the lives of those women. Japanese are a strange people--to the Japanese, women are the equivalent of dogs, use them up, toss them away.

In this undated photo, U.S. servicemen gather outside a sanctioned brothel in Yokosuka, Japan.

TOKYO — Japan's practice of enslaving women to provide sex for its troops in World War II has a little-known sequel: After its surrender — with tacit approval from the U.S. occupation authorities — Japan set up a similar "comfort women" system for American GIs.

Historical documents and records indicate U.S. authorities permitted the official brothel system to operate despite internal reports that women were being coerced into prostitution. The Americans also had full knowledge by then of Japan's treatment of women in countries across Asia that it conquered during the war.

Tens of thousands of women were employed to provide cheap sex to U.S. troops until the spring of 1946, when Gen. Douglas MacArthur shut the brothels down.
