Slovakia To Donate 13 MiG-29 Warplanes To Ukraine

Reuters: Slovakia sends MIG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine - PM

(Reuters) -Slovakia on Friday became the second of Ukraine's allies to provide MIG-29 fighter jets which Kyiv believes are crucial to repel Russia's year-long invasion.

Slovakia joined Poland, which announced its delivery of the planes on Thursday.

Both the NATO members neighbour Ukraine. Its fleet of 11 MiG-29 planes was retired last summer and most of them are not in operational condition.

It will send those that are operational and the rest will go for spare parts. Slovakia will also supply part of its KUB air-defence system, Prime Minister Eduard Heger said.

"Today, the government decided and unanimously approved an international agreement (on the donation)," Heger said.

Who cares?

If they trade 1 Ukrainian jet for 1 Russian jet, the world comes out ahead.

It is war of course the Ukrainians jets are going to get hit. This is understood. what matters is how many Russian jets get hit.

Maybe Russia can replace their jets. Maybe.

Russia suspended work in RS-26. Because of finances and they do not have a deep bench of scientists, engineers and techs. It is only going to get worse as Russia continues to implement their stealth forced recruitment. they are going to universities. So no scientists in the future but plenty of hamburger for the crows.

The Russian could outsource design for their RS-26 ICBM to the US. After all they have that fabulous oil wealth.

Besides the 4 Poland gave, it has another 25 operational. Poland likely wants to donate them as well, but not until it has replacements. The 13 Slovakia just donated were just retired last year.

Bulgaria is the only other NATO country with operational Mig 29s with 11.

But there are additional Mig 29s in NATO inventory in storage. Some of which might become flight worthy, but more likely to be a source of spare parts. Romania might have 23 in open storage. Hungary has between 23-28.

There are various countries that also have Mig 29s in active service or retirement that might be open to selling them, but I don't know whether their political situation or export control laws would allow them to do so.

So I would not be surprised if Ukraine receives more in the coming months.

They probably will get more. Now now much will the US give them in return? It is not being done out of the goodness of thier hearts. Maybe, maybe not.

These first ones will probably be hanger queens the US will also refurbish free of cost to the poles and others.

The other question is how to get them into country.

Fly them in from polish airspace? The Russians will probably do nothing, as usual. But in theory they could monitor and destroy the second they crossed the border.

Even better, once the first batch arrived, destroy any others looking like they are going to cross the border , before they even get there.
.how? Monitor commo and do a radar trac.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
