The approval has been approved. Wait for the next meeting for the Finns to be accepted. Maybe.

For years the prophecies of Anton Johanson seemed highly improbable due to the geo political situation from 1917 until 2021. Finland and Sweden were neutral. No one in Europe was really prepared for war.

But it seems that the world and fate has turned again. We will see.

The $64,000 question is what price was paid for their cooperation? Or what were they threatened with?

Russia threatened Finland with ... wait for it. "Russia!"

Russia last invaded 83 years ago.

If Russia take Ukraine they will want to move Ukraine's borders west due to some old map and take territory away from Hungary, Romania and Poland.

Still got that cold war mentality eh? Your ways of thinking belong in a museum

Russia once owned Poland until WW1. Russia had Poland as part of it Western buffer after Ww2.
between WW1 and WW2 Russia tried to conquer it.

Anything Before Ww2 is not part of the cold War. Yet in those pre Cold War times Russia bedeviled Poland.

Earth to 1834 troll. I've read history going back 7 million years. So do try to play cute and all and impress us with your face plants.

All assumptions based on the past. We are going to war based what we think they might want to do based on history that’s 100 yrs old. Yep, sounds perfectly logical to me. Sorry to have triggered you.

1039 to 1945 is more like 80 years not 100. Either one is approximately 3 generations in length; So it is not ancient history.

Putin himself has said in Germany around 30215 that he desired the old Soviet borders.

As Putler apparatchik you will be rounded up.

It's all strange. Time to grow up and put on the adult pants. I agree with a commenter here that this cold war mentality belongs to a museum.

I've always found it hilarious that we sweeds still think that the big bad wolf will come and get us, ie Russia. Like it's laughable when our military put all cards on Gotland, at one point we had all our armor on that island.

That we need to join NATO if the Russians come. Why on earth would they bypass other countries to get here, take over our idiot problems. Just to get here is a nightmare for Russia. And like Europe would sit back and just watch Russia take Sweden, "Nah, they should have joined NATO!"

One thing we all learned from this is war is that a nation doesn't even have to be in that alliance to get help. So why the F do we even care?

Hans Persson said...

Finland has it own issues with Russia that no one should or could dispute.
But Sweden?

I'm betting there's a lot of bribes behind the scenes and for once our politicians could feel important. And it's astonishing that it's the left. Our only true right party is the only ones that doesn't want to touch NATO. But hey, the adult bullying is strong here too against other minded people.

Obama Chides Romney: 'The 1980s Are Calling, They Want Their Foreign Policy Back'

Obama's comment did not age well. It lasted less than halfway into his second term.

Funny that the Swede brought up Gotland. Gotland was the scene of a famous battle where the good burghers shut the gates on the farmers and let them be slaughtered by the Danish Army. Letting the farmers in and withstanding a siege might have worked if they could withstood 6 weeks of siege. But it was all good. The burghers paid the Danish king, but they got the farmers land. So it was a wash except for the farmers, mercs and Danish King.

It makes sense to put armor on the island. If there is good intel that the Russians want it and they have plans to invade or are thinking about it, the infantry needs the back up.
Contrary to what many WW2 movie watchers think, the primary purpose of a tank is not to kill tanks. It is to hit hard points of resistance and assist the infantry. Infantry works much better against a landing with back up.

They could take over your idiot problems quite easily. They will do it the same way Alexander solved the Gordian Knot. they will round people up and killed them instantly or slowly (Gulag). Housing problem solved. Unemployment solved or partially solved. Of course many people will be relieved of their possessions, liberty and life, but expanding empires do create prosperity for some. So for a time after the takeover so many problems will be solved. So many crimes will be committed by the state.

But remember the problems solved. They will be solved for short time, 1 generation or less, and will reappear as the empire stop expanding and implodes in on itself. This will be another fun time.

Sweden already is a silent NATO partner and was all through the Cold War.

"Why on earth would they bypass other countries to get here"

So after invading Finland you feel you have sufficient time to join NATO?

I suppose they could do it with a verbal agreement over a hotline and immediately broadcast it via radio, TV and internet. Or the Europeans could move at the speed of bureaucracy and take 3 to 10 days.

Putting the chips in now does two things. It might dissuade Russia form invading period. It also keeps weak kneed politicians from caving at the first sign of trouble. If the Russians were half way or entering Helsinki, you do not think there would be many politicians breaking out the knee pads? You have politicians like that in any country. Signing a defense pact won't keep people from breaking out knee pads, but it might lessen the chance of it happening.

Once in Helsinki, the Russians do not have to get to the Swedish/Finnish border before attacking via naval or aviation strikes, spetsnaz or landing troops somewhere. Remember when the Germans invade Belgium in WW2, they already had artillery positions sited and constructed in Belgium before the outbreak of hostilities. They also used civilian aircraft to leapfrog ahead of the main columns to seize crossroads and create roadblocks. Don't assume that you the time it takes to fight from St Petersburg to the Swedish border.

Hans Persson said...

Why would they? That's the question nobody answers. Just because it's Russians? I don't believe that. Maybe you do.

One big reason: Saab

If you get Sweden and can hold it chances are you get Norway. Het Norway and the Arctic is more yours. At that point the frontline would be Greenland, Iceland Scotland and Denmark.

The Germans are not the only cowards. There were a lot of journalists, politicians and others that were under the KGB thumb due to affinity or fear. Last I heard that list of Danish luminaries was still kept secret by the Danish government. Of course it is not to protect the Danish public, but the protect the Danish elite.

With Sweden St Petersburg, the sometimes capital of Russia of no longer on the borderlands. St Petersburg as a port is more protected and threatening.

The Nordic countries are a stopper on the Baltic fleet. Take them over or neutralize them and the fleet has more a free hand.

Look at the bright side. You may have the privilege to build Russian tanks. Germany had a few hundred thousand Frenchmen ending up building NAZI armaments (Service du travail obligatoire).

Hans Persson said...

Even before they enter the Baltic Sea,. image all the worlds Neptune missile's raining down from all sides, not a single boat will ever reach anywhere besides the bottom of the sea. That's all that's going to happen. Then what? If they ever reach Gotland, then what? Starve to death? It's all this un-logical thinking that makes me smile. It's all silly. Best way to describe any of that is to scare up more defense money.

Anonymous said...

If they go for Gotland, they will be engaged in Poland as well.

Hans Persson said...

Oh every country around the Baltic Sea will unleash all their costal defenses, nevermind Poland. Sweden's costal defense is around just thousands of Neptune missile's. Just try. From what we have learned from the Ukraine war is that anything that can be detected is destroyed within minutes. What the hell is going to happen to a slow moving diesel ship convoy built in the 70's.

Oh they have to invade all the countries in the Baltic just to get to Gotland. Very, very logical.

Hans Persson said...

Then what? Are they going to take over the world from Gotland?

Anonymous said...

It is an island. Islands are literal stepping stones. They also protect or deny SLOC. Having an island also gives you better air coverage due to placement of aircraft or radar and AA.

Gotland flanks the cost of Sweden, which, if the Russian did have an army marching through Finland, would find convenient. Just having the opportunity or threat to flank is an advantage.

Hans Persson said...

How on earth would they be able to even supply them there? This thinking is what we heard back in Cold War 1.0. Give it up. Nobody in Sweden cares about Russia, except now this NATO thing that we never going to join. I can probably also speak for most of the Swedish people that we know that Russia is never going to set their fot here. But still, "oooommmmgg, they are going to take our island. Makes perfect sense because politicians say that, omg omg safe spaces, where are they!? Let's suddenly join NATO. Nevermind asking the people, let's do it behind closed doors because the people are to dumb."

We have no idea what deals were made behind those doors with this "US".

Just f give it up. Nobody wants war, but for sure we're going to get one if we're this stupid.

Anonymous said...

How on earth would they be able to even supply them there?

From Kaliningrad

It is a given that Russia wants Belarus. Once it gets Belarus, it will want more.

Frankly, I do not see it, but I would not have seen NAZI Germany getting as far as it did either.

Not giving it up. You on the other hand need to think.

I am married to a Mainland Chinese. You think I want a war? The current situation ruined my plans to make money hand over fist in China.
