Is Stealth Technology All Hype And No Substance?

F-117 Nighthawks

EurAsian Times: Invisible Aircraft: How Russian Radars Busted The Myth Of Stealth Fighters & Proved It’s All Hype & No Substance

The word ‘stealth’ in military parlance conjures up a vision of Hollywood star Kevin Bacon going invisible during a scientific test in the film Hollow Man released in 2020, or Hollywood actor Oliver Jackson-Cohen acquires the ability to go invisible in the 2022 film Invisible Man.

The invisible man idea is fine for being stealthy as a fiction or entertainment story. But is ‘stealth’ valid in reality, with specific reference to an aircraft being invisible to the ground or the airborne radar?

Major powers have already spent billions of US dollars, viz China, Russia, and the US, towards R&D in this field and producing operational aircraft. USA took the lead by manufacturing F-117, F-22, F-35, and B-2 and to-be inducted strategic bomber B-21. China and Russia have miles to go.

WNU Editor: The U.S. invested hundreds of billions of dollars to have a fleet of F-35 fighters based on their stealth capabilities. It would be more than a shock to the U.S. and its allies if this technology does not work.

Under Siege 2.

"Turbulence.

If it moves, Grazer can see it.

They disturb the air

as they fly through it.

Low-altitude turbulence,

that's how you find these things.

There you are...

...Stealths.

I can target these."

It is not like stealth was going to work forever.

If script writers in Hollywood knew, then everyone knows.

Stealth does make it more expensive to defend. A decade or so ago they said you could detect stealth but you would have to have you radars set closer together.

Very often war is like a horse nomad battle.

Oh come on, do those countries that have stealths do not have way to try? Do not think dumb and you will be dumb

People have been saying this for years. The problem isn't the angles of the body or the material that a jet is made out of. It's the 2500 degree exhaust plume of heat and infrared rays blasting out the back of it. This was well understood in the 60's because, well, it's obvious to anyone with half a brain. Lockheed attempted several physical solutions to the stealth problem to no avail. The CIA was on the brink of cancelling the U2 program entirely, as real stealth was considered an unobtainable goal by the known laws of physics.

That's when when Lockheed suggested a radioactive fuel additive that would absorb the plume's radar and IR waves. It is called A-50 and it does reduce an engine's radar signature, but it was a disaster and eventually banned from use by the pentagon. It not only wrecked the engines on the A-12 and the SR-71 couldn't even keep the fuel ignited, it's a highly radioactive toxic waste product that cannot be safely stored or handled.

Since then the dream of stealth was revived as a sales pitch to a new generation of generals and politicians. Everyone is well aware of the exhaust plume problem but nobody talks about it because it would hurt exports when "stealth" is the defining feature of 5th gen airframes.

Israel made some bold claims this year about flying F-35's over Iran completely undetected, claims which reek of the same corporate bullshit that they were accomplice to with the the Patriot/Scud sham. Sure, the Israelis got fed up and went off to instead develop Iron Dome (which actually works), but at the time they sure as hell didn't speak up when H.W. climbed the podium and declared a 99% success rate. Sometimes you have to do a solid for the hand that feeds.

Bottom line is the exhaust problem still hasn't been solved. No aircraft in the last 54 years has been fitted with the separate fuel systems necessary to use A-50, even if the pentagon hadn't determined that the concoction is abhorrent. People wouldn't have lost their minds back in 2019 at the prospect of Turkey buying both F-35's and S-400's if it weren't so. The last thing the MIC wants is an ally doing combat drills which show the F-35 glowing just as brightly as every other jet on a Russian radar. They might start to ask what exactly they're paying for.

The HEAT is WHY the ENGINES ARE on the top of the PLANE and NOT the BOTTOM. It helped back in the day and not at all today it seems against a peer. We shall see.

Donbass Devushka, which translates as “Donbas Girl,” is a series of social media accounts popular on Telegram, Twitter and YouTube that pushed a pro-Kremlin view for an English-speaking audience. Despite presenting itself as being a single Russian blogger, the accounts are run by multiple administrators, including Bils.

Sucks, if you are an American.

"I was also an Aviation Electronics Technician (AT) and I had high clearances, but no clearance an AT would need for in rate work would be anywhere near allowing access to that kind of information. Someone is playing games."

As an American I do not know if I am being played by the CIA, FSB or both.

I will assume both.

I read years ago that the older russian radars could pickup any stealth planes. Newer ones could not. The russians have infra red stations all over russia to pickup anything that moved through the air.

Well, why Russia is making its own stealth jet fighter?

To eventually sell it to the same export market and to maintain the appearance of "parity". Nobody is saying Russia is a saint here.

If stealth tech is a waste of time and money, they why is every enemy of the US trying to ape it?

Anonymous said...

Russia has been aping US planes since WW2. No originality there

It's not a waste. Lockheed has made billions on the lie.

The Russians and Chinese hope to do the same. Without actually having to spend the billions that we did to verify that it can't be done effectively, for a second time.

Stealth angles and material work against RADAR. Radio Detection And Ranging. But if an enemy develops a long range infrared sensor or laser or combination of both, it renders stealth obsolete. Because every single mode of propulsion creates heat.

electric jets a thing yet then?

You have not seen the solar power// hydro powered jets? On long flights it can scoop up water when thirsty.

So stealth doesn't work against radar? Interesting, if true.

Meanwhile back at the aircraft manufacturers.....

By the way any links?

Like anything else it depends on how you use it. In both Gulf wars in Iraq stealth was successfully used. In Yugoslavia a smart man worked how to shoot down a F117. It's Bombay door was opened it got detected and shoot down. Isreal has been very successful so far with the F35 agianst Syria and Iranian targets so far it's still viable it will evolve like any other modern weapon with new technology and upgrades.
