Top US General Says Ukraine Victory Unlikely This Year

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Mark Milley

Defense One: Ukraine Victory Unlikely This Year, Milley Says

“I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm just saying it's a very difficult task,” says top U.S. general.

Ukraine is unlikely to expel all Russian forces from its territory this year, the top U.S. officer said Friday, giving a grim reality check to the expressed goal and hopeful ambitions of policymakers, diplomats, and defense leaders from Washington to Kyiv.

“I don't think it's likely to be done in the near term for this year,” Gen. Mark Milley said Friday in an interview with Defense One.

“Zelenskyy has publicly stated many times that the Ukrainian objective is to kick every Russian out of Russian occupied Ukraine. And that is a significant military task. Very, very difficult military task. You're looking at a couple hundred thousand Russians who are still in Russian-occupied Ukraine. I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm just saying it's a very difficult task,” the Joint Chiefs chairman said. “But that is their objective. They certainly have a right to that, that is their country. And they are on the moral high ground here.”

Fuddy Duddy cannot see past the cocktail circuit, As a non West Point officer he might have been fresh and innovative, but those days are long since past.

Do not think the Ukrainians will ever take back all thier territory. Can you see them regainig control of the Dondass or even Crimea? No, and even if they did, alot of people would be looking for revenge for all the civilians they killed. They would have to fight a vicious guerrilla war fo a long time.

Anyway, a fools dream. If the Ukrainians conduct an offensive, the Russians will fall back and deplete thier numbers with indirect fire. The ukies might take some territory back , but not all. They will finally stall out and the Russians will pummel them again with indirect fire and kill hundreds and thousands more.. Just like Bakhmut. Sickeningly predictable.

McGregor says the Ukies have lost 3 Armies so far. And that's true by all accounts. They go on the offensive again, they will probably lose a 4th.

If history repeats itself, some form of Ukrainian government will control that area again. Could be 40-60-100 years from now. History of the region shows that there is a shifting sands in that region.

it is one of the reasons I am against mass immigration to the USA. There are so many cultures that have long histories of violence and war. Most of the world is Hatfield and McCoy. when you bring these conflicting ethnic groups to your country without assimilation under a consistent rule of law, they continue their fights in your land. Many EU countries know what I am talking about.

Anyways, I know you were talking specifically in the here and now, I just thought I would throw that long term perspective into the conversation.
