South Africa Furious Over U.S. Allegations That They Have Supplied Russia With Weapons And Ammunition

Reuters: South Africa rejects U.S. accusations of arms shipment to Russia

JOHANNESBURG/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -South African officials on Friday hit back at U.S. accusations that a Russian ship had collected weapons from a naval base near Cape Town late last year, a move investors fear could lead Washington to impose sanctions.

The U.S. ambassador to South Africa Reuben Brigety said on Thursday he was confident that a Russian ship under U.S. sanctions took aboard weapons from the Simon's Town base in December, suggesting the transfer was not in line with Pretoria's stance of neutrality in Russia's war against Ukraine.

Western diplomats were alarmed at South Africa carrying out naval exercises with Russia and China this year, and at the timing of a visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

A question remains. Why, when there’s state-of-the art cargo terminals available at Cape Town’s port, was a sanctioned Russian freighter allowed to dock at a South African naval base?

A State Department spokesperson stoked the fire on this issue at a briefing this week, telling reporters, "The U.S. has serious concerns about the docking of a sanctioned Russian cargo vessel at a South African naval port in December of last year."

Sure. The answer is gross incompetence.

Ramaphosa’s government did not deny the claim outright, straining the relationship between the US and its biggest trading partner in Africa and causing turmoil in South African markets.

The incident cast doubt on South Africa’s claims to be non-aligned over the war in Ukraine, despite previous signs that it has been forging closer links with Russia, including joint naval exercises.

Nah. Nobody can trade, think, do what they want once the "US" decide to go to war.
