* Five-day online drills come amid high tensions in the Taiwan Strait, with two major PLA live-fire exercises staged since August

Taiwan has kicked off five days of computerised war games aimed at potential attacks by Beijing’s People’s Liberation Army, with US military personnel expected to be acting as observers.
The online war games are part of the island’s annual Han Kuang exercises simulating responses to threats posed by the PLA, and the latest edition comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
The tabletop drills began at the Hengshan Military Command Centre in Taipei on Monday, Taiwanese military officials said. As in previous years, the exercise will also feature a live-fire segment, which will be staged in July.
