Where Countries Stand On Russia

Statista: Where Countries Stand on Russia

While most of Europe and North America condemns Russia for its war in Ukraine, as far as politics goes, it’s not a universal stance. New analysis by the Economist Intelligence Unit has found that Russia’s support base is slowly growing in some parts of the world. Where 29 countries used to lean towards Russia in 2022, that number has now risen to 35. Conversely, while the number of countries either West-leaning or actively condemning Russia is still by far the bigger group, its figures have dropped from 131 to 122. The EIU says this fall is partly driven by the shift of a number of emerging economies into a more neutral position.

The Indians I talk to in Calgary like Russia. It’s Indian owned liquor stores that I’m still finding Russian made vodka and beer. They can’t order it anymore but at least they aren’t taking it off the shelves like in progressive left stores. Pisses me off

Then you probably don’t live somewhere that the Ukrainian diaspora is active in. All they do all day is harass businesses for not building the iron curtain fast enough.

I think classifying India as neutral is right. India has long-standing relationship with Russia especially in its military sphere. Those are not easily abandoned. It would take years, possibly decades, for India to detach itself with Russia in a way that would not harm India. Yet India is clearly trying to balance its relationship with Russia with the West, not take Russia's side.

Statements by PM Modi clearly state that India is against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. That it supports Ukrainian territorial sovereignty. What it has not done though is publicly condemn Russia's invasion as that would complicate India's existing relationship with Russia. It is not giving any kind of support to Russia, even merely rhetorical. It just is not actively opposing Russia.

Yes, India does continue to buy Russian energy supplies - at a substantial discount. That is less about supporting Russia than it is in exploiting Russia's weakness in a way the Kremlin can still spin as "support." If you believe in the idea that currently Russia is selling its energy supplies at a loss (given its costs of production and transportation) like Yale professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, then India buying Russian energy does two things - 1) it weakens Russia since Russia still sells it at a loss, and 2) it prevents the global energy market from losing an important supplier and thus keeps the market price down for everyone else.

India is currently well positioned foreign policy wise. It is not yet a great player, but important enough that every side is courting it. It wants to satisfy all sides without alienating anyone. So far, it has succeeded in keeping good relations with both Russia and the West.
