Reuters: Pentagon defends sending Ukraine cluster munitions
Under Secretary of Defense Colin Kahl confirmed to reporters at a Pentagon briefing that the bomblet failure rate of the munitions being sent is above 1%, the export of which is banned by a 2009 law, but said the move did not break any laws as President Joe Biden has the authority to waive the limit.
Kahl said he cared about the "humanitarian circumstance" given that civilians could be harmed from unexploded ordnance, "but the worst thing for civilians in Ukraine is for Russia to win the war. And so it's important that they don't."

Update: Biden Defends 'Difficult' Decision to Send Cluster Munitions to Ukraine (The Hill)
WNU Editor: During the Vietnam war there was phrase (true or not) that said the following .... "we had to destroy the village to save it". Now we have a new phrase from the Pentagon .... ‘Russian victory’ worse than civilian cluster-bomb deaths.
Not surprising. Russian media is having a field day with this quote .... ‘Russian victory’ worse than civilian cluster-bomb deaths – Pentagon (RT).
Ukraine has promised Washington that they will not use these cluster munitions against civilian targets. But Ukraine has been using cluster munitions against civilian targets in the Donbas for years. Check out two of Patrick Lancaster's reports on Ukraine's use of cluster bombs below. One from last year and one from eight years ago.

WNU is the Michael Shermer of Blogspot.
Michael Shermer is or was this smart guy that people looked forward to reading in Scientific American. but Mike got on this kick about disproving religion. Readers opined "We got it. You are an atheist. Lets move on." He would not move on.
WNU has orders though from Moscow. sure he lives in Canada but he has property in Moscow. His family also has a real estate business in Russia. So they sure as hell can lean on him. Plus Moscow has been known to poison ex-Russians. So there is that.
Moscow has been using cluster munitions, but WNU ignores that and whines about Ukraine being able to do the same thing.
What does this mean?
It means WNU has gone FULL FRONTAL GOEBBELS.
Not a good look.
Accuse the other side of doing and being what we are.
These are not Vietnam era cluster bombs . Russia is using them with a much higher failure rate than what U.S is sending. Wnu is being ridiculously biased lately. Here's a news flash, no need for them if there was no invasion.
The 155mm ammo shortage requires that these be sent. It's either squirm through the PR discomfort and send the cluster munitions, or send them barely anything at all. The white house would really rather not send these and if 155mm production was sufficient to fill the current needs they wouldn't.
Russia also has a shortage. It is why Russia is buying from North Korea.
One of the reasons KA-52s are being shot down is because the Russians are using them instead of artillery. The reason being ammo shortage or effective Ukrainian counterbattery fire.
Every time a KA-52 is lost, Russia loses 16 to 20 million dollars plus a pilot.
This Brainsurgeon and those that support him will only be happy when the whole world is obliterated from the face of the universe
