Washington Post: New phone sparks worry China has found a way around U.S. tech limits
As Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo was visiting China earlier this week, a sea-green Chinese smartphone was quietly launched online.
It was no normal gadget. And its launch has sparked hushed concern in Washington that U.S. sanctions have failed to prevent China from making a key technological advance.
Such a development would seem to fulfill warnings from U.S. chipmakers that sanctions wouldn’t stop China, but would spur it to redouble efforts to build alternatives to U.S. technology.

WNU Editor: Good question .... While under US sanctions, where did Huawei get the advanced chips for its latest Mate 60 Pro smartphone? (SCMP).
I knew China would eventually defeat US chip sanctions. I just did not expect them to do it as quickly as they have.

Chinese students get engineering degrees. Liberals get queeeeeeeeer studies degrees.
there never was any question what would happen.
what a stupid remark!!
Do you believe all our science people, military people, IT people etc etc are all conservatives and/or registered in the former GOP now called the Trump Troopers?
The blob is great at making their schemes appear to be about national security when really it’s about smartphones and consumer electronics that are encroaching on their favourite tech companies
Learn how tor read tranny wanna-be.
Did I write 100% of American engineers are Republican? No.
I did not give a percentage at all.
Did I write 100% of American engineering or science graduates were Conservative or Republican? No.
I did not give a percentage.
What I imply and what I believe is that America would b far better off if more people were steered to STEM degrees or even conventional humanities (before the jerk offs took over) degrees rather than a degree in queer theory.
Now, go charlie foxtrot is some dark corner, idiot. If you get hurt, pour some vodka on it.
Going to be really interesting to see who's selling thess chips to China.
These*
They stole all our tech already. That's why it is done.
It is more than stealing tech.
1) Business agreements were such that if you wanted to manufacture in China, you had to give up some tech. That is contract law not stealing. you could always decide not to sell or manufacture in China, but not many people did.
2) In the past China bought Soviet and Russian equipment. they also manufactured some under license. They have sown they can innovate and improve on Soviet/Russian design.
3) The PRC sent many students abroad. they figured they might lose 33% of those students. they figured they would still come out ahead. More Chinese graduate with STEM degrees than Americans. Some of them could be slavishly rote in how the go about what they learned, but that cannot be all of them. They have more innovators or thinks in STEM than America has.
4) My guess is that a Taiwanese company might have sold them the chips or given them the tech out patriotism, self preservation, greed or a combo. Hedging bets.
If you want people on your side you have to stand strong you cannot be weak or a laggard. that means a strong economy, strong defense, stick with your allies, etc. If you don't do that, people hedge their bets.

Necessity is the mother of invention, yes?
The Chinese have smart people and super computers. This should not be Much of a shock.
This is the future. These people will achieve great technological feats , given time and persistence.
Just like Bell labs did in 1940s and 50's America.
