Russia - Ukraine War News Morning News Updates -- October 12, 2023 (Videos)

WNU Editor: In the past week, for the first time since the start of the war, I have ignored the news from the Russia - Ukraine war.

Catching up on it this morning.

From the videos that I am seeing and from the commentaries that I am reading it is clear that Ukraine's counteroffensive is over, and that Russia is positioning itself to launch its own counteroffensive starting with the region around Avdiivka.

The videos that I seeing from the Ukrainian side are depressing. These soldiers look tired and beaten up. I do not think any of them have been rotated out for rest in a long time.

Some U.S. officials and military experts believe that Ukraine's plodding three-month-old counteroffensive may now have gained enough momentum to keep pushing past Russian defensive fortifications in southern Ukraine -- meeting an original goal for the effort that has moved slowly since June.

The progress on the ground is happening as Ukraine is on the verge of receiving new weapons, like 31 M1 Abrams tanks, and as some of its pilots have begun the language training needed to prepare them to fly American-made F-16 fighter jets.

ABC News also reported last week that the Biden administration is also likely to provide Ukraine the long range ATACM missiles, with a range of 190 miles, it has been requesting since last year.

Donald Trump alleged, "American taxpayer dollars helped fund these attacks, which many reports are saying came from the Biden Administration."

Those guys are lying ...again..

The Ukrainians losses have been staggering, every day they get weaker. The Russians , they get stronger with the passage of time.

That offensive is over and the Ukrainians will be lucky to make it through to next year,

No celebrations here. just the ugly facts.

Ian Smith and Donald Trump

Trump National Doral Miami is scheduled to host a ReAwaken America tour event featuring Eric Trump, Lara Trump, Trump lawyer Alina Habba, and antisemitic fitness influencer Ian Smith this week. Smith has recommended neo-Nazi and pro-Hitler propaganda, shared social media posts denying the Holocaust, suggested the “good guys” didn’t win World War 2, and complained that Jewish people are behind “all of these things that are used to control us” and that more people aren’t questioning why “everybody that” President Joe Biden “surrounds himself with is Jewish.”

This is at least the fourth Hitler-promoting antisemite who has appeared on the ReAwaken tour with Eric Trump. Smith also spoke at a Trump Doral event in May that featured the former president’s son and other Trump allies. He met former President Donald Trump last year.

Other than misinformation from the Atlantic and Washington Post, provide me links to facts instead of "allegations", because with a little googeling everyone can see that this Ian was working with immigration and everyone knows what kind of words the left are using to smear immigration-workers. Or are you pissed at him because he's white and ripped?

Atlantic is highly respected, fact checks, and has been around a very long time; WP is also very respectable. Now you can go to social media or Newsmax etc and disclaim as you do.

The Atlantic was respected. Not any more. It is a neocon rag. Has been for at least 4-5 years.

More nonsense from WNU Editor. His comments seem detached from reality.

Russia is not "positioning" to launch an offensive. It has already launched a massive offensive using hundreds of armored vehicles and tanks. I don't know what videos WNU Editor has seen, but the videos I've seen have shown a completed massacre of the Russian attackers. Reported Russian armored vehicle and tank losses over the past two days is something like 200, and there are lots of visual confirmations. This isn't propaganda. Ukrainians are reporting the size of Russian infantry forces on the second day is only half or a third of what they were on the first day. Now some of that will be due to a change in tactics, but it probably also indicates the scale of losses on the Russian side.

Everything points that this was a major operation designed to encircle and trap the Ukrainian forces at Avdivka. It also seems to have essentially failed on the first day although the Russians will no doubt continue to send in troops for a while. But with tactical surprise already gone, it is highly likely this operation will not succeed.

I am sure the Ukrainians around Avdivka are tired. Combat does that to you. Have the units there been rotated out? I don't know. We do know that Ukraine has been rotating out troops, but not all units have been rotated.

At the same time, we absolutely know for certain that Russia is not rotating any of their troops. Although they are moving some forces from one area to another in order to prevent a collapse of their front, but that is not a rotation. They are also sending in last of their strategic reserves in Russia, albeit with less training, less equipment, and less numbers than planned because the Russians cannot afford to complete it. They need new cannon fodder now in order to hold the line. Funny how WNU Editor never mentions the many Russian videos complaining about the lack of rotation, their huge losses, lack of artillery support, and being given obviously ancient and bad munitions. They too look "tired and beaten up." But we'll never see those videos here.

This will likely to be the third failed Russian offensive of the year. Each one gets smaller in geographic scope. WNU Editor just wants to pretend this is "positioning" because he doesn't want to admit the scale of the Russian losses. If he pretends there is more coming for the "real" offensive, then he doesn't have to acknowledge defeat.

yea sure.

The ukies are going to take Tokmak soon . that is what you said 3 months ago.
If things were so bad for the Russians, why did the Ukrainians not kick their ass 4 months ago with their new high powered nato brigades.

Your logic and so called facts do not fit reality.

You are not a legitimate source of information.

You are an USG gs 4 who uses chat bot to write your posts.

so easy to diss this or that magazine or newspaper and yet not supplying a substantial reason for the charge: a good example of juvenile thinking and writing.

Come on Freddy that reply has gotten very stale.

"At the same time, we absolutely know for certain that Russia is not rotating any of their troops. "

There was one or more troop rotations around Robotyne. Not sure if that speaks well or ill of Russian capability. They replaced essentially large shattered units. These units had been large. When a unit is whittled down to 50% or less how hard is it for a Russian commander to withdraw such a unit. I bet once the replacements arrive, the survivors will walk out if nothing else without any encouragement needed.

No the whole issue is part of a boiler plate narrative screed. How many units, which ones and when were knocked out or attrited? It is all moon dust and hopium.

I stand by what I say: if you want to dismiss The NY Times and TheAtlantic: tell us why and give examples of their failure. Simply calling them names is juvenile. and do try to remember or least learn that the decent papers have News and they have Edidorials and they have Opinion pieces. These are labeled as such ( the last two I cited). Now examine this site you are on.Note how many post are from MSM, the sources you dismiss. You get news from social media and think that is journalism when it is opinion, bs, fake, slanted. Or from online sources that are proud to call themselves conservative (ie right wing), such as Pajamas Media.
Again, you employ the Trumpian approach: simply call names and repeat and think that is is mature. It is not.

ISW: Russian troops fight near Robotyne without rotation or reinforcement < Dated report.

I think the rotation happened in September.

It was something like one Ukrainian battalion or something savaged 3 Russian regiments.

Swaggerwalk thinks I am kidding when I tell him to watch his back. In the next year or two there will be a lot of angry, mental or shattered men on the Russian streets. There will be a lot of anger.

This segues into another subject. The Russian military budget. It went from 65 billion to 100+ billion. It almost doubled and WNU expects us to give up all hope. We between 26 billion is for death benefits and 21 billion is to take care of those maimed. So essentially the Russian MoD budget has not increased at all. The VA component ballooned. A cynical person might say they are bullish on Russian nursing care stock. Cynical but true.

~ 2013 $20 billion
2021 $66 billion
2022 $86 billion
2023 $100+ billion

85 OPS & MAINT.
34 Replacement for lost weapons and equipment
21 Medical Care
26 Death Benefits
_______________
166 Billion

Casualties could be estimated from death benefits and medical care.

Russia could put O&M in Death benefits and medical care to throw off foreign intel agencies, but that would be Byzantine and probably allow for graft and corruption.

Swaggerwalk should watch his back around his fellow Russians,

The Atlantic. It is a neocon maze. Today they have Elliot Cohen, then you have Annie applebaum, then you have the Editor who is a liar, why? He is the one that started the lie that Trump insulted the WW2 vets at Normandy.

Then about 6 months ago you had that bs Atlantic article about how we should have an amnesty and forgiveness for the hate and condemnation of non vaced people during COVID.

The NYT? are they going to give back the Pulitzer they won for the trump / Steele dossiers?

No of course not

Here is the deal .

You lie to me... and you become illegitimate. You are not to be believed until I can find 2 or 3 non msm sources to back it up.

Not my doing

You are the ones that lied. No one put a gun to your heads and made you do it.

As far as I am concerned, the nyt and Atlantic are on the same level as RT or Sputnik.

The troop rotation was reported by katana, if I remember correctly.

I'll. take my chances.

Why don't you take a nice nighttime stroll in downtown Chicago, or Baltimore or NYC. Make sure you wear a nice suite.

See what happens to you. Let us know how that works for you.

Neocon is both liberal and rhino. It is a blob uniparty entity that has an ideology that fits anywhere you want to be in the political swamp of DC

I would hate to be Russian about now. Where do Russian like to go? Cypress? Dubai? If you are identifiably big in the Russian military, espionage or military industrial complex, travel to the Mideast at your own risk.

Dude, I had no idea who this Ian Smith was beforehand. Just googled it and read a few pages, wasn't really that hard to figure out the backstory. I have no idea what paper is respected in the "US", but those two I mentioned was clearly some kind of character assassination attempt based on "rumors" and "leaked" emails with quotes, again, clearly taken out of context.

Why Billy's old man Irving helped start the neocon movement.

But don't forget wolfowitz, perle, feith, Abrams Cheney, frum, Cohen the whole Kagan mob and many more. Serving both sides and loyal to none.

If you can not even get a man's name right, it is Kristol and not Kristal, then how much should we trust what you say?
ok. Challenge: How many Pulitzer prizes were won by NY Times for outstanding journalism? Now tell us how many by your new sources.
I dislike repetitiveness, but simply calling someone a name does not make for a grown-up argument. I also note that conservatives who dislike Trump and say so, ie what you lads call Rhinos, are now also to be called names...again, childish.
Trump is lined up with 90 indictments in 4 venues! but he is ok, right? And yes the first one on money lies and taxes is now not a jury matter: he is found guilty and what remains is to determine punishment.
Your guy Trump even to this day continues to say the election was stolen! and his minions saying this have lost some 30 court cases on this issue.

Anonymous said...

You of all people like repetitiveness!

No one cares about the spelling.

NYT, Duranty, Duranty, he won a Pulitzer didn't he.

Anonymous said...

You realize Liz Cheney is out of power, right? She is not likely to be in power again.

She did vote with Trump 93% of the time.

Anonymous said...

Is the Pulitzer prize your metric for the truth? That's nice. It is not mine.

Tell me again of the journalistic excellence in the Steele dossier reporting.

But you are missing some things. This is not 1942 or 1953 or 67 or even 1992.

The country has changed. The concepts of journalism have changed. You now have activist journalists and opinion journalism. You have editors as gate keepers.

Look at Naomi Wolfe or Sheryl Atkinson , not to mention Julian Assange. Hard corps journalism is dead.

To say the NYT deserves to be believed because in the last 80 years it won xx amount of Pulitzers is crap. It is like saying that Pravada needs to be believed because it has been awarded the " order of the Red Banner" so many times.

Prior history has no reflection on today's NYTs and it's culture of progressive liberalism. Example, look at the 1619 project. That whole idea is horribly flawed but the NYT for ideological reasons will not condemn it.

Your line of reasoning is flawed.
