Reuters: Putin filmed in China accompanied by officers with Russian nuclear briefcase
MOSCOW (Reuters) -Rare footage was shown on Wednesday of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing accompanied by officers carrying the so-called nuclear briefcase which can be used to order a nuclear strike.
Putin, after a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, was filmed walking to another meeting surrounded by security and followed by two Russian naval officers in uniform each carrying a briefcase. The camera zooms in on one of the briefcases.

The only tie the threat was not there was when the Berlin Wall fell, The USSR disintegrated under its lack of knowledge of the human psyche and from human avarice. ad Fukuyama wrote "The End of History and the Last Man". During that time I married some from the other side.

Putin is made that his conventional forces are losing their ass quite literally. Biden did not stay bought or stay bought enough and so Russian boys are dying from stingers, javelins, superior artillery (counter battery, range and mobility), intel, tactic and strategy.

Today we passed 5,000 Russian tanks destroyed. Russian tanks are being destroyed in quantities 2 or 3 times the production rate and refurbishment rate of obsolete tanks.
Unless China is providing Russia with specialty steel in great enough quantities, then the artillery reserves are already being raided for replacement barrels.
Helicopters have to be dispersed creating security and logistics problems, kept where they are inviting more mass attack or are withdrawn into Russia. withdrawn to Russia the helicopters will be a problem for Kharkiv Oblast. Also makes them predictable.
Bribed Biden still has some use. Have not seen AMRAAMS sent to Ukraine. So the bribes are not a total loss.
Without helicopters and Ground attack aircraft the Russian artillery and mine fields will not be enough.
What I wonder is how Russia is doing replacing the destroyed BT-2s. the chassis are tanks chassis. So that part should be easy. If they cannot replace or manufacture new hydraulics that will be telling.
The BT-2s remind me that central planning and the great soviet system could not walk and chew gum at the same time. They bought pipe layers from the US. Pipelayers are a rather unsophisticated product. You have the tracked vehicle. You hang on counterweights(large rectangular castings. How hard can that be?). a boom (very tricky for a central planner) and a winch(rocket science?). Throw in a sling.
A tank I would think is a higher tech and more complicated vehicle than a piper layer, but central planning and the Russian administrative state.
Would Russia be better off ruled from Beijing? They have pipelayers and ca walk and chew gum at the same time.

During Jimmy carter's presidency the USSR bought grain and pipe layers. My old man told me that was the moment he knew the USSR was done. Defeated. A piper layer is a very simple piece of contraction equipment compared to an excavator, scraper, bulldozer or the rest.
I feel sad for you. WASHINGTON -- A spokesman for the Caterpillar Tractor Co. said today the Commerce Department had approved an export license to sell the Soviet Union several hundred million dollars in equipment to lay a natural gas pipeline from Siberia to Western Europe.
The potential sale falls within the national security guidelines set by President Carter in restricting trade between the United States and the Soviets because of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, officials said.
Richard Kahler, an official in Caterpillar's Washington office, said the possible sale involved about 200 pipe-laying machines and an estimated 200 heavy duty tractors.
The possible contract, first reported by the Washington Post this morning, involves other equipment, spare parts and support services amounting to 'several hundred millions of dollars' over several years, Kahler said.
The proposed pipeline would run from Soviet natural gas fields in Eastern Siberia to West Germany, where other NATO countries could hook onto the line.
The pipeline would ease the dependence of NATO countries on possible unstable Middle East energy supplies. At the same time, it could possibly give the Soviets leverage on policy decisions by the United States's energy-dependent allies in Western Europe.
