Politico.eu: Trump vowed he’d ‘never’ help Europe if it’s attacked, top EU official says
'By the way NATO is dead,’ the former (and potential future) US president added in private meeting
BRUSSELS — One of Europe's most senior politicians recounted how former U.S. President Donald Trump privately warned that America would not come to the EU's aid if it was attacked militarily.
"You need to understand that if Europe is under attack we will never come to help you and to support you," Trump told European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in 2020, according to French European Commissioner Thierry Breton, who was also present at a meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
"By the way, NATO is dead, and we will leave, we will quit NATO," Trump also said, according to Breton. "And he added, ‘and by the way, you owe me $400 billion, because you didn’t pay, you Germans, what you had to pay for defense,'" Breton said about the tense meeting, where the EU's then-trade chief Phil Hogan was also present.

If Trump would not defend Europe supposedly then Why did he tell Germany to increase defense spending and live up to its obligations. If he would not commit America (which he cannot due to treaties approved by the Senate), why bother haranguing Germany about its lax defense posture?
Von Der Leyen reminds me of the doge of Venice. Venal and corrupt. She was never elected. Her elevation to her position reminds me of the Venetian electoral one. It was created to prevent manipulation and bribery in elections and it was defeated.
Von Der Leyen has a thin resume between position and accomplishment. She went from the Ministry of Women and Children to the defense ministry, because ..?
And she did a bang up job at the Defense Ministry. See Trump's totally justified complaint.
It begs the question. If we really du into her time at the Ministry of Women and children what results would we find?
Other than being a place holder at two ministries what qualifies Von Der Leyen to be EU head?
Did Trump say what was alleged? IDK. It is known that national leaders will lie on the national stage. Senator Reid told the whole world that Mitt Romney did not pay his taxes. Reid never apologized.
If Trump did say, it maybe he said it to be mean to Von Der Leyen or perhaps to throw cold water on her face and wake her the FUCK UP!
Meeting Von Der Leyen must be underwhelming. She went form a doctor to Ministry of Children to Ministry of Defense. I assume she was a good doctor. Have not heard otherwise. We know she was a disaster at the Ministry of Defense. Grounded planes. A fleet that could not sail. German soldiers begging for equipment at NATO exercises. So what is left? Ministry of Children Have things gotten better or worse for German women and children? Over the last decade they have gotten worse.
Was Von Der Leyen kicked upstairs? Looks like it to me.
