Today marks the 17th anniversary of the devastating September 11th terrorist attacks that left 2,996 people dead and more than 6,000 others injured in the United States.

The horrific day began when hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into floors 93-99 of the World Trade Center’s North Tower at 8.46am. Minutes later at 9.03am, United Airlines Flight 175 was crashed by hijackers into floors 75-85 of WTC’s South Tower.

Everyone aboard both planes were instantly killed along with those on the affected floors inside both towers.

Smouldering with flames after being stuck by a hijacked passenger plane, these newly released images show the Pentagon right after the 9/11 attacks.

The photos, which were made public by the FBI, were taken in the hours and days after al Qaeda terrorists unleashed hell on September 11 2001.

They show apocalyptic scenes as fire crews tried to put out the blaze that gouged a hole the size of a building into the headquarters of America's military.

Fragments of American Airlines flight 77 are seen on the floor having been torn from the aircraft as it made impact.

Never-Before-Seen 9/11 Photos Released

Looking at these images never gets any easier. The photos that follow depict the horrible images of the September 11, 2001 attacks and the aftermath of the recovery efforts where some 2800 innocent people died, including those aboard hijacked flights American 11 and United 175. ABC News recently obtained these images after filing a Freedom of Information Act request in 2009 with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which had collected as part of an investigation into the collapse of the World Trade Center. Never-Before-Seen Aerial Photos Of World Trade Center After 9/11 Attacks Released -- National Post

ABC News has published dramatic new aerial photos of the World Trade Center collapsing after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The images were obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request filed with the National Institute of Standards and Technology last year. The NIST had collected the photos as part of its investigation of the attacks.

My Comment: On September 11, 2001 I called and woke up my brother in San Francisco to tell him that we are now at war.

Sighhh.... it never entered my mind that we would still be fighting this war in 2010.
