"Osama bin Laden's Right-Hand Man In Europe" Deported From Britain To Jordan

Britain Deports Cleric Abu Qatada After Legal Marathon -- Reuters

(Reuters) - A radical Muslim cleric once called "Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe" was deported from Britain to Jordan on Sunday, ending years of British government efforts to send him back home to face terrorism charges.

A police convoy collected Abu Qatada from London's Belmarsh prison after midnight and drove him through the streets of the capital to a military airport. Soon after arriving in Jordan, he was taken under heavy guard to a nearby military court.

The legal battle to deport Abu Qatada has embarrassed successive British governments. Prime Minister David Cameron said he was "absolutely delighted" it was over.

"It's an issue that ... has made my blood boil - that this man who has no right to be in our country, who's a threat to our country, that it took so long and was so difficult to deport him," Cameron told reporters.

My Comment: I suspect that many in Britain are saying good riddance to him.

Another Terrorist Fights Against Britain's Deportation Policies

Bin Laden's 'Right-Hand Man' And Terror Suspect Abu Qatada Will Be Back On Our Streets TOMORROW… And Theresa May Says It’s All Strasbourg’s Fault -- Daily Mail

* Qatada claims he won't get fair trial abroad but Britain wants him deported
* He was once described by judge as Bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe
* Terror suspect was convicted of terrorism in Jordan in his absence in 1999
* Qatada's QC: 'No reasonable prospect of lawful removal in reasonable time'
* Cleric will be under a 16-hour curfew and allowed out from 8am to 4pm
* Theresa May: 'It's deeply unsatisfactory he hasn't already been deported'
* Tory MP Peter Bone says May should ignore courts and put Qatada on plane

Home Secretary Theresa May today blamed the European Court of Human Rights for the Government's thwarted attempt to deport hate preacher and suspected terrorist Abu Qatada.

Qatada today won his appeal against deportation to Jordan to face trial and will be released tomorrow after being granted bail, forcing security officials to monitor him around the clock at huge cost to British taxpayers.

She accused the body of 'moving the goalposts' over the deportation of dangerous criminals and has vowed to kick the hate preacher out of the UK.

The Frustrating Case Of Al Qaeda Front Man Abu Qatada

We CAN Kick Qatada Out! Former Home Office Minister David Mellor Insists UK Could Ignore European Court Ruling And Deport Hate Preacher To Jordan -- Daily Mail

Abu Qatada could be deported to Jordan if the Government chose to reject a European Court ruling, a former Home Office minister said today.

David Mellor said Home Secretary Theresa May should simply ignore the ruling in Strasbourg that prevents Britain throwing out the hate preacher because he could stand trial for terrorism offences involving evidence gathered through torture.

Speaking after Qatada was released from prison, he said: 'The ruling in Strasbourg is a gnat-bite that the British Government is totally free in law to ignore.

'There is clearance up to the level of the Supreme Court here to deport him to Jordan, which is a friendly state with a civilised government.

Hate Cleric, Abu Qatada, Issues Rallying Cry From Prison

From Times Online:

The extremist cleric Abu Qatada has issued a 6,000-word rallying cry to his followers from inside one of Britain’s most secure prison units.

The Palestinian preacher hails the “victory” of the Mujahidin and claims that his treatment has helped to radicalise a new generation of young British Muslims.

Despite demanding his freedom, he says that “the gift of prison” has helped him to lose more than 50lb (22kg) in weight. He even suggests that a vigorous exercise programme appears to have cured his diabetes and back trouble.

The cleric boasts of being told by Bilal Abdullah, the NHS doctor jailed for the car bomb attacks in London and Glasgow in 2007, that he was heavily influenced by the cleric’s taped sermons. He describes the bomber, who narrowly failed in his attempts to blow up a nightclub and airport terminal, as “truthfully a man from the men of Islam, in knowledge, action, steadfastness and manhood”.

The Benefits Of Jihad

Out on bail: Prayer beads in hand, Al Qaeda's ambassador

Abu Qatada, Al Qaeda's ambassador in Europe, strolls along a busy London street fondling his prayer beads.

This is the first photograph of the greying 47-year-old - said to be one of the world's most dangerous terrorist suspects - since he was released on bail from a high-security prison after the courts ordered that he could not be sent home to Jordan because his human rights would have been breached.

My Comment: Abu Qatada gets paid more than what servicemen are being paid to fight in Afghanistan. And the U.K. Ministry of Defence wonders why more than half of the men serving in Afghanistan do not want to re-enlist.

Why the Brits Are Setting Terrorists Free

Abu Qatada

From The Wall Street Journal:

It turns out that the U.S., whose Supreme Court last month ruled that non-American prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay may challenge their detention, isn't the only country where judges are hampering the war on terror. Many people here are rubbing their eyes at the fact that Britain is letting out of jail some of al Qaeda's most dangerous members. In June, a British court released the notorious Islamist preacher Abu Qatada, who had spent the previous three years in jail pending deportation to Jordan to stand trial on terrorism charges.

Now there are media reports that the U.K. government is considering releasing an even more dangerous terrorist this week, rather than deporting him to his native Algeria. The man known only as "U" (to protect his identity) was a close contact of Abu Qatada and allegedly was involved in planning terror operations in Los Angeles and Strasbourg, France.

Abu Qatada -- Bin Laden's Right Hand Man In Europe Released From Prison

Abu Qatada

From Yahoo News:

LONDON (AFP) - A radical Muslim cleric once described as "Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe" was released from prison Tuesday, but with strict conditions including a ban on attending mosques.

The Home Office announced last month that Abu Qatada, who first arrived in Britain in the early 1990s but disappeared before new anti-terror laws came in after September 11, 2001, would be freed on bail.

On Tuesday the Special Immigration Advisory Commission (SIAC) published the detailed bail and curfew conditions, which include wearing an electronic tag and being subject to a 22-hour-a-day curfew at an undisclosed location.
