New Book Reveals How Al Qaeda Leader Anwar al-Awlaki Was Set Up With The Promise Of Marriage

How The CIA Set A Terrorist Up With ‘Groupie’ For Marriage — And Death -- New York Post

In September 2009, Morten Storm, a young Danish national-turned-Islamic jihadist, flew to Yemen to visit an old friend — Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born terrorist leading al Qaeda in Yemen.

Awlaki had been released from prison two years prior. He had served an 18-month sentence on ambiguous charges. After his release, Awlaki went underground.

He soon sent Storm an e-mail. “Come to Yemen,” it read. “I need to see you.”

As a UK resident with a Yemeni wife, Storm was highly valuable to Awlaki. And for Storm, the attention of one of jihad’s most powerful leaders was thrilling.

Storm and his wife flew into Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, and were met by a ragtag bunch of young radicals with AK-47s. They drove a Toyota Land Cruiser and took Storm and his wife deep into al Qaeda territory.

Storm found one stressed-out terrorist.

US Ordered To Release Memo In Anwar al-Awlaki Drone Killing -- The Guardian

Federal court rules in favour of ACLU and New York Times to force release of papers describing legal justification for strike

The US government must publicly disclose in redacted form secret papers describing its legal justification for using drones to kill citizens suspected of terrorism overseas, because President Barack Obama and senior government officials have commented on the subject, a federal appeals court ruled Monday.

The 2nd US circuit court of appeals in New York ruled in a Freedom of Information Act case brought by the American Civil Liberties Union and two reporters for the New York Times. In 2011, they sought any documents in which Department of Justice lawyers had discussed the highly classified "targeted-killing" program.

The Al Qaeda Leader And His Escorts

Indiscretions: The FBI watched as Anwar al-Awlaki bought sex seven times from prostitutes in the Washington DC area. Agents estimate he spent $2,300 in a few short months

Al-Qaeda Leader Anwar al-Awlaki 'Spent Thousands On Prostitutes As He Traveled The U.S. Spreading His Message Of Radical Islam' -- Daily Mail

The radical American-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki spent thousands of dollars on prostitutes while he traveled the country preaching fundamentalist Islam, it had been revealed.

The FBI, which was tracking al-Awlaki's movements, watched as he met at least seven times with prostitutes in the Washington D.C. area between November 2001 and February 2002, according to newly leaked documents.

The agency estimated he spent $2,300 on hookers in Washington alone. He is also believed to have purchased the services of prostitutes when he traveled to Florida.

Fox News reports that FBI documents obtained by the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch show agents tracked al-Awlaki's history with escorts after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

Al-Awlaki was killed in a drone airstrike in Yemen in September 2011 after he was added to a CIA 'kill list.'

From The Grave, The Cleric Inspiring A New Generation Of Terrorists -- CNN

(CNN) -- He was born and raised in the United States, and killed by the United States. And now from beyond the grave he inspires a new generation of would-be terrorists to attack the United States.

Militant cleric Anwar al-Awlaki continues to speak through sermons posted online, and U.S. officials are investigating whether his words may have influenced Boston bombers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

A U.S. government official told CNN's Jake Tapper on Tuesday that "the preachings of Anwar al-Awlaki were likely to have been among the videos they watched." A U.S. government source had previously told CNN that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev had claimed the brothers had no connection to overseas Islamist terrorist groups and were radicalized through the Internet.

The CIA Plot To Get Al-Awlaki

The Danish Agent, The Croatian Blonde And The CIA Plot To Get al-Awlaki -- CNN

(CNN) -- The story would not be out of place on the TV thriller "Homeland": the Danish petty criminal turned double agent who receives $250,000 in cash for helping the CIA try to ensnare one of al Qaeda's most wanted -- by finding him a wife.

The wanted man was American-born al Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who had become one of the most effective propagandists for the group. The bride-to-be was a pretty blonde from Croatia. The agent was Morten Storm, who had long moved in radical Islamist circles and had apparently won the trust of al-Awlaki during a stay in Yemen in 2006.

Breaking The Silence On The Killing Of Anwar al-Awlaki

Obama Team To Break Silence On al-Awlaki Killing -- Daily Beast/Newsweek

Inside the White House debate over how to talk about al Qaeda’s Anwar al-Awlaki.

After months of internal debate, the Obama administration is planning to reveal publicly the legal reasoning behind its decision to kill the American-born leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Anwar al-Awlaki.

Awlaki, whom American officials had identified as the chief of external operations for the al Qaeda affiliate, was killed in a CIA drone strike last September in Northern Yemen. The targeted killing was one of the most controversial actions in Barack Obama’s war on terror. Civil libertarians and human-rights activists have argued that it amounted to a summary execution on the basis of secret evidence and without due process. Defenders of the administration have maintained that the killing was a necessary and lawful act of war to prevent an imminent threat to the safety of the American people.

Is the Obama administration concerned about the legacy that such a killing will entail .... you betcha ... especially among their more liberal base. How can one condemn torture under President Bush, when President Obama's administration sanctions killings. Hence the scrambling to justify their reasons.

Getting Ready For Blow-Back From the Al-Awlaki Assassination

U.S. Officials Warn Of Possible Retaliation Over al-Awlaki Killing -- CNN

The U.S. State Department issued a "worldwide" alert Saturday, urging overseas travelers to be mindful of "the potential for retaliation against U.S. citizens and interests" following the killing of American-born militant cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

Al-Awlaki -- the face of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula whose fluency with English and technology made him a top terrorist recruiter-- was killed Friday in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen, officials said.

The State Department alert, which is in effect until November 30, urges U.S. citizens abroad to register with the government to make it easier to contact them in case of an emergency.

The Myth Of Anwar al-Awlaki -- J.M. Berger, Foreign Policy

One of America's most-wanted Islamist radicals was once a humble, mainstream preacher who became enraged by the war on terror. At least, that's the story some people are selling.

On Tuesday, Aug. 9, Naser Abdo, an American soldier, was indicted for plotting a terrorist attack against soldiers stationed at Fort Hood -- just the latest in a series of U.S. citizens who have been inspired to violence by the work of Anwar al-Awlaki, the American imam who went rogue and today threatens the United States from his father's country of Yemen.

Radical Imam Invited To Speak About 'Moderate Islam' At The Pentagon After 9/11 May Have Known About Attacks In Advance -- The Daily Mail

* Agency did not discuss imam's alleged soliciting of prostitutes

Shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, radical American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was invited to the Pentagon to speak about 'moderate Islam', after a flawed vetting process.

Al-Awlaki is currently thought to be hiding in Yemen, where he has dual citizenship with the U.S.

He is the highest ranking American on the CIA’s kill or capture list, and was the target of a failed missile attack earlier this month that killed two militants.

Al-Awlaki was on the short list to succeed Osama bin Laden as Al Qaeda leader.

Recommends stealing from 'enemy' to fund terror.

The latest edition of al Qaeda's online, English-language magazine includes an article offering an Islamic justification for extremists to steal from non-Muslims to finance their activities. Analysts say this shows that the U.S. and its allies are succeeding in drying up sources of terrorist funding.

The five-page article in Inspire magazine was written by Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S.-Yemeni radical cleric who is regarded by counterterrorism officials as one of al Qaeda's most dangerous leaders because of his ability to inspire homegrown, lone-wolf extremists in Western lands.

Al-Qaeda Propagandist Anwar al-Awlaki Sentenced To Ten Years In Prison -- The Telegraph

Fugitive al-Qaeda propagandist Anwar al-Awlaki has received a ten year sentence for his role in the murder of a French energy contractor.

A Yemeni criminal court said the killing of Jacques Spagnolo was "committed under the incitement" of al-Awlaki. It held Othman al-Awlaki, a relative of al-Awlaki who is also on the run, guilty on the same charges. Hisham Mohammad Assem, who gunned down Mr Spagnolo near Sana'a in October, has been given a death sentence.

Prosecutors have said that al-Awlaki corresponded with Assem for months, encouraging him to kill foreigners.

Anwar Awlaki, not Osama Bin Laden, was labeled the "most dangerous man in the world" by a New York Police Department counterterror official during a briefing Wednesday.

U.S. Citizen al-Aulaqi Is Still A Target For US Drones

Obama Invokes 'State Secrets' Claim To Dismiss Suit Against Targeting Of U.S. Citizen al-Aulaqi -- Washington Post

The Obama administration urged a federal judge early Saturday to dismiss a lawsuit over its targeting of a U.S. citizen for killing overseas, saying that the case would reveal state secrets.

The U.S.-born citizen, Anwar al-Aulaqi, is a cleric now believed to be in Yemen. Federal authorities allege that he is leading a branch of al-Qaeda there.

Government lawyers called the state-secrets argument a last resort to toss out the case, and it seems likely to revive a debate over the reach of a president's powers in the global war against al-Qaeda.
