France Celebrates Bastille Day
* The traditional parade returned to the Champs-Elysees after a one-year hiatus caused by the Covid pandemic
* One soldier, identified as Maximilien, proposed to his girlfriend on the cobblestoned avenue
* Virus fears are still lurking, but France's government decided to go ahead with the Bastille Day parade
* The holiday commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris on July 14, 1789, which marked the birth of the French Revolution
France celebrated Bastille Day with thousands of troops marching in the Paris parade, warplanes roaring overhead and traditional parties around the country, after last year's events were scaled back because of virus fears.
The traditional parade returned to the Champs-Elysees after a one-year hiatus caused by the Covid-19 pandemic - and one soldier even used the occasion to propose to his girlfriend on the cobblestoned avenue, kneeling and kissing her hand.
Two horses stumbled in the final stages of the celebrations, throwing their Republican Guard riders onto the pavement, but overall the day's main event went according to plan.

FOX News: Bastille Day in France showcases European military cooperation
The annual Bastille Day celebration in Paris this year was not just about showcasing France, but also military cooperation among European continues.
The flags of 10 countries of the European Intervention Initiative, a joint military pact created last year, led Sunday's military parade down the Champs Elysees avenue in Paris.
In a message to the French people before the parade, President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the importance of France's commitment to boost European security.

Gallic pride took an embarrassing knock ahead of France’s World Cup final match when the annual Bastille Day military parade went awry in the air and on the ground and in full view of President Emmanuel Macron.
The July 14 parade is France’s chance to display its military muscle as soldiers troop down the Champs-Elysées under the gaze of the President and French fighter and reconnaissance jets thunder past overhead.
But only minutes into the parade down "the world's most beautiful avenue", a glaring glitch occurred as two gendarmes involved in a complex motorbike ballet with horsemen from the Republic Guard crashed into each other within yards of Mr Macron.

African And UN Soldiers Join French Troops On March Through Paris For Bastille Day Parade To Mark 'Victory Against Terrorism' In Mali
* Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille, which sparked the French Revolution in 1789
* The annual military parade on the Champs Elysees in Paris draws thousands of people every year
* This year's guests of honour were UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon and president of Mali Dioncounda Traore
* The Malian presence recognised joint effort with the French to oust Islamists who had overrun northern Mali
Troops from 13 African countries that took part in the French-led war against al Qaeda-linked extremists in Mali marched with the French military during the Bastille Day parade in Paris to honour their role in the conflict.
UN troops in blue berets who are helping to stabilise the west African nation of Mali paraded with thousands of other soldiers down the Champs-Elysees Avenue in France's annual tribute to military might.
It marks the storming of the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, by angry Paris crowds that helped spark the French Revolution.

France Proudly Celebrates Bastille Day Despite Deaths Of Its Soldiers In Afghanistan Overshadowing Annual Military Parade -- Daily Mail
France's military were out in full force today for Bastille Day, an annual celebration of the storming of the Bastille in 1789 - one of the great symbolic events of the French Revolution.
Thousands of serviceman marched, rode and drove along the Champs-Elysees in Paris as part of the oldest and largest military parade in Europe - but the event was overshadowed by yesterday's devastating deaths of soldiers in Afghanistan, France's biggest one-day troop loss since 2008.
Speaking ahead of the traditional July 14 military parade, French president Nicolas Sarkozy called for a special meeting to discuss new security measures for soldiers in Afghanistan.

My Comment: I saw the parade in Paris on Bastille Day about 20 years ago .... yup .... it`s a great parade.
