Business Insider: Bill Gates says political polarization 'may bring it all to an end' and could even lead to a civil war 

* Bill Gates is sounding the alarm on political polarization in the US. 

* "Political polarization may bring it all to an end, we're going to have a hung election and a civil war," he told Forbes recently. 

* Gates, who has been the target of many conspiracy theories over the years, also pointed out the dangers of misinformation. 

Bill Gates usually focuses on issues like poverty and infectious diseases through his charitable foundation, but another problem on his mind is the polarization of US politics.

"I admit that political polarization may bring it all to an end, we're going to have a hung election and a civil war," he recently said in the keynote conversation at this year's Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy. "I have no expertise in that. I'm not going to divert my money to that because I wouldn't know how to spend it." 

Political polarization, he says, goes hand-in-hand with another issue: the spread of misinformation.

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has expressed confidence that the world will be 'completely back to normal' by the end of 2022. 

The Microsoft founder said he expected Covid infection levels to be reduced to 'very small numbers' by the end of next year as vaccines became increasingly available around the world. 

He said within 'the next three or four months' the US and other developed countries will start to have excess vaccines they can share with the developing world. 

'Over the balance of the year, the US, the UK and others will be able to make sure that the vaccines are now going to the developing countries,' he told Sky News' Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme.

WNU Editor: Historically speaking. When the world experienced major wars, pandemics, etc., it took years (i.e. 5 years or more) to return to "normal". I expect the same will happen with the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. IMHO Bill Gates is too optimistic.

Reuters: Bill Gates says world should be back to normal by end-2022 due to vaccines: Polish media 

WARSAW (Reuters) - The world should be back to normal by the end of 2022 thanks to COVID-19 vaccines, Bill Gates said in an interview for Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza and television broadcaster TVN24. 

“This is an incredible tragedy,” the Microsoft co-founder said on the pandemic, adding that the only good news was the access to vaccines. 

“By the end of 2022 we should be basically completely back to normal,” Gates said. 

Gates, a billionaire who stepped down as chairman of Microsoft Corp in 2014, has through his philanthropic Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation committed at least $1.75 billion to the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

That includes support for some makers of vaccines, diagnostics and potential treatments.

WNU Editor: I feel the same way. If we are lucky, coupled with the mass distribution of vaccines, this pandemic should burn itself out in a year or two. The biggest concern will then be on how to handle the economic consequences of this disaster, and the sacrifices that will need to be made to manage our  debt/unemployment/and social emergencies.
