Islamic State Claims Sinai Attack That Killed/Wounded 15 Egyptian Soldiers

Army spokesman says troops engaged in an ‘exchange of fire’ with gunmen at checkpoint in restive North Sinai, where forces are battling IS

CAIRO — Egypt’s army said Saturday seven suspected jihadists were “eliminated” and 15 soldiers killed or wounded in an attack in the Sinai Peninsula, where troops are fighting the Islamic State jihadist group.

Security forces responded to the attack on a checkpoint in restive North Sinai with an “exchange of fire,” army spokesman Tamer el-Refai said in a statement.

“An officer and 14 non-commissioned soldiers were killed or wounded,” he added, without giving a precise number for the dead.

Medical sources in North Sinai told AFP that 11 soldiers were killed in the attack.

Egypt’s President Orders Army And Police To Restore Order In Sinai In Three Months



Ahram Online: Egypt's Sisi orders army, police to restore order in Sinai with 'utmost force' in three months

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Wednesday ordered the Egyptian army and police forces to restore stability and security in the Sinai Peninsula within three months using "utmost force."

The president's command came during his speech at a public celebration of the Prophet Muhammad's birth (Moulid El-Nabi) at Al-Azhar's conference center in Cairo.

The event was attended by tens of Azhar clerics and public officials and including Minister of Religious Endowments Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed El-Tayyeb, Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar, and the newly appointed Army Chief of Staff, Mohamed Farid Hegazi.

26 Egyptian Soldiers Killed In Sinai Suicide Attack And Subsequent Gun Battle. 40 Militants Reported Killed



Al Jazeera: Egypt: 26 soldiers killed in Sinai suicide attack

At least 26 soldiers killed in suicide bombing at army checkpoint near Rafah in northern Sinai, security sources say.

At least 26 Egyptian soldiers including a colonel were killed in a suicide bomb attack on an army checkpoint in northern Sinai, according to security sources.

Another 40 fighters were killed in a subsequent gun battle with soldiers at the checkpoint, an army spokesperson said on Friday.

Suicide Bomb Attack Kills Ten Police Officers In Sinai

AFP: Truck bomb kills 9 police in Egypt’s Sinai

A truck bomb attack on an Egyptian security checkpoint in the Sinai Peninsula killed at least nine policemen on Monday, officials and state media said.

Police officials said a suicide bomber rammed a truck packed with explosives into the checkpoint in the north Sinai city of El-Arish and gunmen then opened fire on the security post.

ISIS’s Egyptian branch in the Sinai Peninsula has carried out several such attacks over the past two years.

Islamic State Vows To Destroy Egypt's Pyramids And The Sphinx

National Post: ISIL vows to demolish the pyramids and the sphinx amid wave of attacks on Egyptian forces

As tensions rise in Egypt, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is calling for the nation’s cultural icons, like the pyramids and the sphinx, should be destroyed.

ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi reportedly said destroying the monuments was a “religious duty.”

British Muslim political activist Anjem Choudary told the Telegraph: “When Egypt comes under the auspices of the Khalifa (Caliphate), there will be no more Pyramids, no more Sphinx, no more idolatry. This will be just.”
