Defence Blog: U.S. Army prepares soldiers for new ground vehicle

The U.S. Army is actively conducting driver training as part of the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) operator course.

Multiple units on Fort McCoy continues to introduce the new Joint Light Tactical Vehicle by teaching them the basic operations of one of the Army’s newest ground vehicles.

The JLTV family of vehicles is designed to restore payload and performance that were traded from light tactical vehicles to add protection in recent conflict, according to the Army.

JLTVs give service members more options in a protected mobility solution that is also the first vehicle purpose-built for modern battlefield networks.

JLTV operator training at Fort McCoy began in May 2019.

It took four years for the Army to finally start fielding the much-hyped Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, and it took soldiers less than four days to destroy one.

Soldiers with the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart in Georgia received the first of its 500 JLTVs on Jan. 14.

A few days later, a photo surfaced on U.S. Army WTF! Moments showing what appeared to be one of the Raider Brigaide's brand new vehicles on its side in the aftermath of a rollover, hood open and parts spilling onto the pavement.

U.S. Army Ready To Roll-Out Its New All-Purpose Vehicle

National Interest: US Army to roll out ‘new symbol of American fighting power’: the JLTV

WASHINGTON: First there was the Jeep, then came the Humvee. Now the US military has a new all-purpose vehicle that aspires to become another symbol of American fighting power: the JLTV.

Granted, the name is not as catchy as its predecessors, but the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle signals a technological leap forward that, the military hopes, will protect troops for decades.

Last month, the Pentagon announced the winner of a bid to replace thousands of Humvees, the culmination of a search that began in the years after the start of the Iraq war in 2003.

While the beefy-looking Humvee was praised for its speed and ubiquity as invading US troops poured into Iraq, a growing insurgency and the spread of roadside bombs there and in Afghanistan spelt trouble for the vehicle and its occupants.
