Kyrgyzstan announced on Sunday that 12 more people had been killed in border clashes with Tajikistan this week, amid an outbreak of fighting between the Central Asian countries.

Sunday's statement means the current death toll on the Kyrgyzstan side is at least 36, while Tajikistan has not provided exact figures for its dead.

Clashes erupted around the Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border on Friday, with both sides accusing one another of using tanks, mortars, rocket artillery and drones -- at times, against civilian settlements.

Border Clashes Intensify Between Kyrgyzstan And Tajikistan

RFE: Dozens Of Deaths Reported As Violence Erupts Along Kyrgyz-Tajik Border Despite Cease-Fire Agreement

Dozens have been killed on both sides in border clashes between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan that involved heavy artillery along disputed areas and a reported drone attack on a village in Tajikistan.

The reports about heavy casualties came after the leaders of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan early on September 16 said they had agreed to a cease-fire and ordered their troops to withdraw as reports of clashes raised security concerns in Central Asia.

The Kyrgyz Health Ministry said 24 people were killed and 87 wounded in the clashes. It said early on September 17 that five injured children were among the wounded and they have been sent to Bishkek for treatment.

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan Border Guards Exchange Fire On Road Closing

Msocow Times: Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan Border Guards Exchange Fire

Kyrgyzstan accused Central Asian rival Tajikistan of firing on its troops Thursday in an outbreak of violence that comes after clashes at their contested border left dozens dead last year.

"The main exchanges of fire between border guard units of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan take place in the villages of Tort-Kocho and Chyr-Dobo.

The Tajik side is using mortars and grenade launchers," Kyrgystan's national committee said in a statement.

The statement described the situation at the border as "tense", after an incident earlier in the day saw citizens of Tajikistan block a road between two Kyrgyz cities that passes through Tajikistan.

Heavy Fighting Reported On The Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan Border

BBC: Deadly fighting on Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border kills at least 31

At least 31 people have been killed, scores injured and 10,000 evacuated after a water dispute led to some of the worst clashes in years on a disputed Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border.

Clashes started on Wednesday when people from both sides hurled stones at each other after surveillance cameras were installed at a water facility.

A truce and troop pull-back were agreed but some shooting appeared to continue.

The casualty figures were from the Kyrgyz side with Tajik numbers unclear.

Kyrgyzstan's health minister Aliza Soltonbekova said in a televised briefing that 31 people had been killed and more than 150 wounded since the violence began on Thursday.
