Malaysia's former prime minister said that Muslims have the right 'to kill millions of French people', shortly after a knife-wielding Islamist killed three people in a deadly terror attack in Nice. 

Mahathir Mohamad, who lost power in February this year, said freedom of expression does not include 'insulting other people' as fury over satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed sweeps the Islamic world. 

The 95-year-old politician said he did not approve of the beheading of a French school teacher for sharing caricatures of the Prophet, but said: 'Irrespective of the religion professed, angry people kill'.

CNBC: Former Malaysian PM Najib Razak sentenced to 12 years in jail, fined $50 million over 1MDB scandal

* Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has been sentenced to 12 years in jail after being found guilty on all seven charges in a case linked to the multi-billion dollar financial scandal at state fund 1MDB.
* The charges include three counts of money laundering, three counts of criminal breach of trust and one count of abuse of power.
* The former prime minister faces dozens of other charges in four additional trials also related to the 1MDB scandal.

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Tuesday was sentenced to 12 years in jail and handed a fine of 210 million ringgits ($49.3 million) over his involvement in the now infamous 1MDB scandal.

The 67-year-old was found guilty of all seven charges in the first of his five trials linked to the multi-billion dollar scandal at state fund 1MDB. Najib’s lawyers have asked for a stay of execution for the jail sentence.

Questions around the missing money from 1MDB helped contribute to the defeat of the political coalition he led in the 2018 general elections. Najib had allegedly illegally received funds in his personal bank accounts that can be traced to 1MDB.

An opposition alliance led by Malaysia's former ruler Mahathir Mohamad has won a majority in parliament - a shock victory that ends the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition's 60-year grip on power.

North Koreans Wanted For Questioning In The Murder of Kim Jong-Nam Return To North Korea With His Body

Reuters: N. Korean murder suspects go home with victim's body as Malaysia forced to swap

Three North Koreans wanted for questioning over the murder of the estranged half-brother of their country's leader returned home on Friday along with the body of victim Kim Jong Nam after Malaysia agreed a swap deal with the reclusive state.

Malaysian police investigating what U.S. and South Korean officials say was an assassination carried out by North Korean agents took statements from the three before they were allowed to leave the country.

"We have obtained whatever we want from them...They have assisted us and they have been allowed to leave," police chief Khalid Abu Bakar told a news conference in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, saying there were no grounds to hold the men.

Reuters: North Korea bars Malaysians from leaving as murder row boils

North Korea barred Malaysians from leaving the country on Tuesday, sparking tit-for-tat action by Malaysia, as police investigating the murder of Kim Jong Nam in Kuala Lumpur sought to question up to three men hiding in the North Korean embassy.

Malaysia was outraged by the murder of the North Korean leader's estranged half brother at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Feb. 13 by assassins using VX nerve agent, a chemical listed by the United Nations as a weapon of mass destruction.

Police have identified eight North Koreans wanted in connection with the murder, including a senior North Korean diplomat and a state airline employee - two of the three believed to be hiding in the embassy. The only people charged so far are a Vietnamese woman and an Indonesian woman.

Multi-ethnic country stunned by bill to introduce ancient religious punishments.

Malaysia’s government has caused widespread outrage in the multi-ethnic country after adopting an Islamic penal code that will introduce amputations and stoning as punishments for some crimes.

Prime Minister Najib Razak’s coalition government unexpectedly submitted the bill that had been proposed by the Islamist group Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS).

PAS has been pushing federal MPs to amend laws so that it can implement strict Islamic criminal laws, the Straits Times reported. This would include chopping off the hands of thieves.

WSJ: 1MDB Scandal: Deposits in Malaysian Leader Najib’s Accounts Said to Top $1 Billion

Global investigators believe much of it originated with state development fund and moved to Prime Minister Najib Razak’s accounts via offshore entities

Deposits into personal accounts of Malaysia’s prime minister totaled more than $1 billion—hundreds of millions more than previously identified—and global investigators believe much of it originated with a Malaysian state fund, people familiar with the matter say.

The investigators’ belief contradicts a conclusion reached recently by Malaysia’s attorney general.

The attorney general said $681 million deposited to Prime Minister Najib Razak’s account—identified by The Wall Street Journal last year—was a legal donation from a member of Saudi Arabia’s royal family, and most was returned. The attorney general said there was nothing improper and it was time to stop scrutinizing the deposits, a notion echoed by Mr. Najib.

More Fighting Reported In Borneo Between Malaysian Forces And Armed Filipinos

Fresh Fighting Reported In Sabah Standoff Site -- GMA News

Four days after a bloody clash in Sabah that left at least 12 Filipinos and two Malaysian police dead, fresh fighting was reported in the Lahad Datu area early Tuesday.

A report on Malaysia's The Star Online said "gunshots were heard" and "fighter jets" were seen circling the Felda Sahabat area.

"Gunshots were heard and fighter jets were seen circling around the Felda Sahabat area. Four (explosions) were also heard in Kampung Tanduo," the report said.

The reported resumption of hostilities came a day after Malaysian forces started bringing in heavy weapons to the site of the three-week standoff.

Violence Spreads In Borneo As Five Malaysian Police Killed -- Reuters

Gunmen have killed five policemen in Malaysia's Sabah state where members of an armed faction from the Philippines are staking an ancient claim to the remote corner of Borneo island and have been facing off with security forces.

The violence could reignite tension between the Philippines and Malaysia, threaten growing economic interests in the resource-rich region and even lead to a delay in a Malaysian general election.

The shootings late on Saturday followed the killings on Friday of two policemen and 12 members of the faction, who are followers of the sultan of Sulu, a south Philippine region, who occupied a Sabah village in February to press their claim.

MANILA—A standoff turned bloody Friday between Malaysian security forces and Filipino followers of a Muslim clan leader claiming the Malaysian state of Sabah as part of the old Sultanate of Sulu. Twelve Filipinos were killed as well as two Malaysian police officers.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said the Filipino group shouldn't test his resolve to protect the sovereignty of his country.

Sabah Police Chief Hamza Taib said the fighting wasn't over in the village of Lahad Datu, where armed Filipino invaders landed about three weeks ago.

"We have tightened the cordon. There are about 80 to 100 armed people holed up. We want to end this as soon as possible," he said.

Religious Violence In Malaysia Escalates As More Churches Attacked -- The Telegraph

Religious violence in Malaysia escalated on Sunday after three more churches were attacked in an unprecedented wave of assaults on Christian houses of worship.

No one was hurt in the latest upsurge of violence which saw two churches firebombed and a third dubbed with black paint in a row sparked by a court decision allowing non-Muslims to use the word "Allah" in place of God in their literature and worship.

Four other churches in Kuala Lumpur were firebombed on Friday and Saturday amid outrage in the Muslim-majority country over the court's move to overturn a government prohibition on the use of Allah by Christians when using the Malay language.
