Former Sudan President Omar al-Bashir Charged Over The Killing Of Protesters

Al Jazeera: Sudan's Omar al-Bashir charged over killing of protesters

Prosecutor's office says former president charged with 'inciting and participating in killing of protesters'.

Sudan's former President Omar al-Bashir has been charged "with inciting and participating" in the killing of protesters during the mass protests that lead to the end of his decades-long rule.

The prosecutor general's announcement on Monday came as protest organisers and military rulers resumed a new round of talks on handing over power to a civilian interim body.

"Omar al-Bashir and others have been charged for inciting and participating in the killing of demonstrators," the prosecutor general's office said.

Sudan's President Pays Defiant Visit To Darfur

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir greets his supporters in Darfur's capital of al-Fasher, Sudan, Wednesday, July 23, 2008. From Yahoo News:

NYALA, Sudan - Sudan's president made a defiant visit to Darfur just a week after being charged with genocide in the war-ravaged region, vowing not to be intimidated by the indictment and then breaking into a tribal dance on a parched field to the delight of cheering supporters.

Wearing a beige suit and sunglasses and carrying a silver-tipped cane, President Omar al-Bashir exuded confidence during his stops Wednesday. He sought to cast himself as a peacemaker during speeches across the troubled land where an international prosecutor accuses him of committing crimes against humanity.

The carefully orchestrated trip seemed designed to portray the president as being deeply concerned about the region's people as his government tries to persuade the U.N. Security Council to block the case against him. It was al-Bashir's first known visit to Darfur in more than three years, and he rarely allows Western journalists to accompany him anywhere.

Sudanese Government Backed Darfur Attacks, Says Janjaweed Commander

Rebels in East Chad to where many refugees have fled from Darfur

From The Telegraph:

A high-ranking commander who armed and led Janjaweed militiamen in attacks on hundreds of villages in Darfur has come forward to claim that he did so at the behest of the Sudanese government.

Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court are tomorrow expected to take a significant step towards putting Sudan's leaders on trial by presenting evidence against President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

As they pursue a case against Sudan's rulers in Khartoum, some of the most damning evidence yet that the killing was directed by the government has been provided by Arbab Idries, who was a key commander between 2003-7.

An estimated 300,000 black Africans died in ethnic massacres in Darfur at the hands of Arabic-speaking militias, in what the US has described as genocide. A further 2.5 million refugees have been driven from their homes.

My Comment: Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir reminds me of former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic. A tyrant who is intolerant of other ethnic groups .... an intolerance that leads to ethnic cleansing and mass murder. Like Milosevic, Sudan's President and government leaders should be indicted .... but probably will not. Africa is Africa .... no one really wants to get tied up in that mess.
