DW: Senegal protests: More clashes erupt as death toll rises  

Clashes between supporters of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and the police have killed at least 15 people. The violence erupted after he was sentenced to two years in prison. 

Senegalese government officials said on Saturday that the death toll from clashes between police and supporters of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko had risen to 15. 

Two members of the security forces were among those killed in some of the deadliest protests in the western African nation in recent decades.

France 24: Clashes in Senegal kill one after arrest of opposition leader Sonko 

Senegalese police clashed with supporters of arrested opposition leader Ousmane Sonko on Thursday, leaving one person dead in the south of the country, a police official said. 

It was the first death confirmed in clashes since Sonko was arrested on Wednesday for disturbing public order as protests broke out ahead of his court appearance on a rape charge.

Al Jazeera: Electoral commission: Senegal's Macky Sall wins second term

The 57-year-old incumbent received 58.27 percent of Sunday's vote, which observers say had no major irregularities.

Senegalese President Macky Sall has won re-election without the need for a second round of voting, the country's electoral commission announced on Thursday.

Following the announcement, Idrissa Seck, the opposition candidate and runner-up in the race, said he will not appeal the election results.

Seck had previously said that his camp's results showed Sall not winning enough votes for re-election in the first round.

Senegalese President Macky Sall is headed towards a second term in office, his prime minister says.

Mohammed Dionne said preliminary results suggested Mr Sall had secured about 57% of the vote in Sunday's elections, but an official result will take days.

Mr Sall faced four challengers in the vote, but was accused of preventing his main rivals from running.

Two well-known opposition figures were barred from taking part.

Khalifa Sall, the popular former mayor of Dakar, and Karim Wade, the son of the former president, were deemed ineligible to run last month because of corruption convictions.

Senegal's President Concedes Defeat In Runoff Election -- CNN

(CNN) -- Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade called rival Macky Sall to concede Sunday's runoff election, which Sall hailed as a "victory of the Senegalese people," state media reported.

The 85-year-old Wade faced off against his former prime minister and protege after he failed to win a majority during last month's controversial election. The two survived a field of 14 candidates during the February 27 election, with Wade receiving 32% of the vote and Sall getting 25%.

Sall garnered support from several of the failed candidates, who vowed solidarity against Wade as he sought a third term.

Senegal's leader Abdoulaye Wade has admitted that he will now have to face a run-off after failing to win more than 50% in the first round of voting.

"The numbers are clear, we are headed to a second round," his spokesman Amadou Sall said.

Unofficial results show Mr Wade, 85, is likely to face former Prime Minister Macky Sall in the run-off.

Mr Wade's bid for a third term has sparked weeks of violent protests, leading to about six deaths.

Polling day itself was largely peaceful.

Early unconfirmed reports from Senegal's controversial presidential election indicate a tight race between incumbent Abdoulaye Wade and former Prime Minister Macky Sall.

If no candidate wins an outright majority there will be a run-off.

President Wade, 85, is seeking a third term in office despite serving a constitutional limit of two terms.

A crowd at a polling station in the capital, Dakar, booed Mr Wade as he cast his vote.

They could be heard shouting: "Get out, old man!"

Riot police in Senegal fired tear gas and rubber bullets at stone-throwing demonstrators after prayers at a mosque in Dakar, in fresh violence a week before presidential elections.

Rescue workers took away one man who was unconscious after being hit by a rubber bullet, an AFP journalist witnessed.

It was the latest violence in days of urban clashes between police and protesters trying to defy a ban and hold demonstrations against 85-year-old President Abdoulaye Wade's plan to run for a third term in office.

President's Car Attacked in Senegal -- Voice of America

Protesters angered by Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade's decision to run for a third term pelted his car with rocks Wednesday, forcing him to abandon the vehicle.

Mr. Wade was campaigning in the town of Nguegnene. Witnesses tell VOA the president's guards attacked some of the protesters. They reacted by throwing rocks at the president's car, shattering its windows.

At least one person has been killed in the Senegalese capital during a demonstration against President Abdoulaye Wade's re-election bid.

Police and thousands of opposition supporters clashed in the centre of the city on Tuesday evening.

Tear gas was fired and one student died when he was run over by a truck.

Earlier in the week, two people were shot dead during protests in a northern town after a court ruled that Mr Wade's third-term election bid was legal.

Elections in the West African country - often held up as one of Africa's model democracies - are due on 26 February.
