Disturbing new images have emerged of the dead body of the 12-year-old son of a Tamil leader that researchers say could prove he was executed by Sri Lankan government forces.

The photographs of Balachandran Prabhakaran, son of Velupillai Prabhakaran, head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, were taken in May 2009 at the end of the government's conflict with the rebels.

The first pictures appear to show the child in the custody of Sri Lankan forces and he is seen sitting on a bench wrapped in a blanket and eating some food.

My Comment: This blogger covered the Sri Lankan civil war very closely .... especially the last year of the conflict. As wars go this one was horrific .... especially the last few weeks when tens of thousands of Tamils were cornered into a location where escape was impossible and the bloodshed was overwhelming. The goal of the Sri Lankan military was obvious, the extermination of the Tiger movement as a viable political and military entity .... and they were to use all means necessary to achieve it. And when it finally came to an end .... the need to exact revenge took precedent over reconciliation and compromise. As a result Balachandran Prabhakaran was murdered .... as well as many others .... not for who they were .... but for what they may become 10-20-30 years in the future.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — The defeated Tamil Tiger rebels confirmed Sunday that their supreme leader was killed in the group's final battle against Sri Lankan troops.

The almost mythic commander, Velupillai Prabhakaran, led a terror-driven Tamil insurrection in Sri Lanka for more than a quarter century. Last week the government declared it finally killed Prabhakaran and proclaimed victory against his Tamil Tigers, crushing the rebellion that the U.N. estimates cost between 80,000 to 100,000 lives.

But many Tamils didn't believe it.

Tamil Tigers Attack Colombo With Aircraft -- The Guardian

Two Tamil Tiger aircraft launched an attack on Colombo last night sending a message of defiance to the Sri Lankan government which believes it is close to defeating the rebels, who are holed-up in the north-east of the country.

At least two people were confirmed dead last night and a further 50 injured after the Sri Lankan military shot down the light aircraft, one of which crashed into a tax office building.

Rebel fighters are boxed into a 34-square mile pocket of dense forest, convincing the Sri Lankan government that an end is in sight to the decades-long civil war. Witnesses said the air attack started at around 9.30pm as two jets appeared over the city's port area.

'Safe Zone' In Sri Lanka Conflict -- BBC

The Sri Lankan military says it has designated a safe zone for civilians as it pushes ahead with its offensive against Tamil Tigers in the north-east.

Military spokesman Brig Udaya Nanayakkara said advancing troops would not fire into a 32 sq km buffer zone.

"We have already air dropped leaflets to let local people know, and are also passing on the message via the International Red Cross," he said.

Aid agencies say there are about 250,000 civilians in rebel-held areas.

Separately, the UK Foreign Office said Prime Minister Gordon Brown had written to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to express concerns about the situation in the country.

Sri Lanka's Next Battle -- A Commentary

Could it be that Sri Lanka's quarter-century battle against a fierce insurgency is nearly over? The government's capture of Kilinochchi, the northern stronghold of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, represents a major victory. But the military can't win this war alone, and the next phase of the war could see the Tigers turn to guerrilla warfare to continue their fight. Winning the fight will require a combination of military subjugation of remaining Tiger fighters and a political solution for the majority of the country's Tamil population.

Although Colombo can't end the war just yet, it's closer to being able to than it has been at any other point in the conflict. Under President Mahinda Rajapakse, the military has transformed into an efficient fighting force. Kilinochchi itself has fallen, and so has the Elephant Pass to the north, the patch that connects the Jaffna peninsula to the rest of the island. The Tigers are now boxed into an area of 1,000 square kilometers with 3,000 hardcore fighters backed by 300,000 Tamil civilians who, the government says, are being used as human shields.

Sri Lanka says there have been heavy clashes between its forces and the Tamil Tigers in a battle to take the key rebel stronghold of Kilinochchi.

The defence ministry says the latest fighting began before dawn, with the Tamil Tigers launching a counter-attack on troops.

But the military says it drove them off with artillery and rocket launchers, and inflicted heavy casualties.

The Tigers have not commented and there are no independent accounts.

A Fearful End To Sri Lanka's War?

Task Force 1 now marching towards Paranthan LTTE stronghold has captured one of the LTTE airstrips located in the Nivil area this afternoon (Nov 20).

Sri Lanka's government says it is nearing victory in its 25-year conflict with the Tamil Tigers, but as Roland Buerk explains the war will leave a bitter legacy.

The Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter flew fast and low out of Anuradhapura, heading north.

The white domes of the ancient city's Buddhist temples stood high over the green canopy of the treetops.

Flares thumped out of tubes on the helicopter's side, bright red sparks trailed thick white smoke into the jungle just below, a defence against being shot down.

We were being flown to meet soldiers taking part in the military's offensive against the Tamil Tigers. Not too close to the battlefields though: Sri Lanka's government carefully controls access by journalists.

My Comment: Sri Lanka may defeat the infrastructure of the LTTE army, but it will not stop the men and women who support independence from continuing the fight. Sri Lanka is now faced with a long term occupation and a guerilla/terrorist war from its Tamil population.

Sri Lanka Steps Up Attacks After Flying Tiger Raid

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka stepped up its aerial bombing campaign against Tamil Tiger rebels Wednesday after the guerrillas devastated a key military complex and left 25 people dead, the defence ministry said.

Fighter jets pounded what the Sri Lankan military called the Tiger intelligence command and control centre deep inside the rebel-held Kilinochchi region, the ministry said in a statement.

"Taking on offensive raids into the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) backyard, Sri Lanka air force fighter jets made precision air sorties at the LTTE's main intelligence command and control centre located in Kilinochchi," the statement said.

It said 19 Tiger rebels and two soldiers were killed in fresh ground attacks on Tuesday in addition to the fighting that took place at the main military complex of Vavuniya, which was hit by the rebels.

Sri Lanka Appeals To Tamils To Flee To Govt Territory -- AFP

COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lanka on Thursday appealed to minority ethnic Tamil civilians living in the line of fire in rebel-held towns to move to areas under government control, saying it would guarantee them safe passage.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse said the military had cleared a route for people fleeing the island's embattled north, where troops are advancing on the rebel capital of Kilinochchi, 330 kilometres (205 miles) north of Colombo.

"We plan to give passage to people from Kilinochchi to come to (government-held) Vavuniya. We're dropping leaflets from the air, encouraging people to leave, giving details of routes to take to safety," Rajapakse said.

UN aid agencies say nearly 135,000 people have been driven from their homes due to fierce fighting between government forces and Tamil Tiger separatist rebels in the past two months

My Comment: This war is almost to an end. The next stage of this conflict is terrorism and a guerrilla war. How long that phase of the conflict is going to take will be dependent on political reconciliation .... of which there is none at the moment.

Sri Lanka Holds Local Polls As Army Heads
To Rebel Capital -- Yahoo News/AFP

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lanka staged local elections under tight security Saturday as troops pushed deeper into Tamil Tiger territory, closing in on the rebel capital in the war-ravaged north, officials said.

Two out of the country's nine provinces cast ballots to elect new top local officials, without any incidents of violence reported, police said.

"We deployed about 25,000 men to guard polling booths and the reports so far suggest that the voting went off without any major incident," a police official said.

The provinces which went to the polls -- North Central and Sabaragamuwa -- are not hit by fighting between troops and Tiger rebels, but the government had turned the vote into an unofficial referendum on its military strategy.

My Comment: The Sri Lankan Government is making an all out push to end this war by the end of the year. I predict that they will succeed. But terrorism and insurgent attacks will become the result, thereby alienating the two communities even more.

Tamil Tigers Tacitly Admit Losing

COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels Tuesday tacitly admitted they were losing ground in the face of a major military offensive by warning that thousands of civilians in the north were at risk.

In their first public acknowledgement that government forces were moving deeper into areas previously held by them, the Tigers said civilians have had to move several times because of the military onslaught.

"Persistent shelling in this area, where two weeks ago a large number of internally displaced people sought refuge, forced them to (move) again further inside Kilinochchi," the Tigers said, referring to their political capital.

"Such multiple displacements are also adding to the delays in providing adequate shelter," the Tigers said in a statement.

The Sri Lankan government, which pulled out of a Norwegian-brokered ceasefire with the rebels in January, says its troops are advancing on several fronts in their bid to dismantle the Tamil Tigers' northern mini-state.

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka beefed up security on Monday and warned of possible rebel attacks around the capital Colombo as the island's Tamil Tiger rebels marked the 21st anniversary of their first rebel suicide attack.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on the weekend commemorated the 356 men and women who have blown themselves up suicide attacks since the first such attack on 5th July 1987, when the suicide bomber or Black Tiger drove an explosive-laden truck into a Sri Lankan Army garrison in northern Jaffna.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: A three-week battle culminated in government troops capturing a Tamil Tiger rebel-held village in northern Sri Lanka on Thursday, while separate fighting in the region left 12 guerrillas dead, the military said.

Also Thursday, the air force bombed two northern rebel positions, the military said.

The casualties were the latest in the island's escalating civil war, marked by near-daily airstrikes, sea and ground battles, as well as frequent bombings. The United Nations estimates that 200 civilians have been killed in targeted bombings so far this year.

COLOMBO: At least 31 LTTE men and two soldiers were killed in fierce clashes in Sri Lanka's northern region. The army captured a portion of the rebel-held territory, officials said on Tuesday.

Around 10 LTTE men were killed in confrontations with the security forces as troops gained control over areas in Mullikkandal, Minnaniranchan and Marattikannadi in Mannar region, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said. The army claimed that it had captured three square kilometres of the area in the north of Adampan in Mannar.

Britain stands accused of applying double standards to its counter-terrorism policy because a banned Tamil militant group is being allowed to raise money among expatriates in London.

President Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka said that supporters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were able to raise millions of pounds each year from the Tamil community in Britain, some of whom were coerced into donating the money.

“You can't have two different attitudes towards terrorism,” he told The Times this week during a visit to London for a Commonwealth meeting, where he raised the issue with Gordon Brown. “I don't agree that there are good terrorists and bad terrorists. There is only one kind of terrorist.”

There are about 150,000 Tamils living in Britain, mostly in North London. The Sri Lankans estimate that £70million is sent home every year.

My Comment: Both sides are now dug in for a long struggle. the Sri Lanka Government has clearly taken the gloves off and are now pursuing a military solution. They probably will destroy the LTTE military and political infrastructure, but it will not destroy the cause. This has the potential to be Asia's bloodiest war (afghanistan excluded).

Seven soldiers and 17 Tamil Tiger rebels are killed in clashes in the past days in Sri Lanka's northern Welioya region, the military says.

The troops supported by mortar and artillery fire captured five positions, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara confirmed, adding that 35 rebels and 19 soldiers were injured in the fighting.

A further 30 rebels and six soldiers were killed in weekend fighting in the northern districts of Jaffna, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa, and Mannar, he said.

The latest fighting follows the Friday twin bus blasts that left 24 civilians dead, added the military.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Tamil rebels and government troops waged a fierce battle in northern Sri Lanka on Wednesday, killing 52 guerrillas and 38 soldiers in one of the deadliest clashes this year between the two sides, the military said.
